The atomic bomb was the result of times of war and its use in Hiroshima and Nagasaki was decided by the military that only had one objective: to end the war. The imperatives in times of war and in times of peace are different. The objective that the United States had was unthinkable today. Russia had considerable experience with what Nazi Germany represented. The United States had very little direct experience but knew what was happening in Russia and in the rest of Europe. They had it in mind; the military did not want to wait. They had a weapon and wanted to use it as their imperative to end the war.
It was evident that the country that had the atomic bomb would win the war. The government of the United States delayed in beginning
Therefore, The United States dropped it in order to finish the war. They wanted to prevent more deaths and if the atomic bomb didn’t stop them, nothing would’ve stopped them. For example, after Truman dropped the bomb he released a letter and sources from CNN quoted “that the decision to use the two nuclear bombs saved the lives of 250,000 Allied troops and 250,000 Japanese by helping to prevent an invasion”. Although it was rough because they didn’t know the long term effects on that the atomic bomb would have on the cities. If the U.S. didn’t drop the bomb the war could’ve gotten worse and be more deadly in the long run.
The United States was already going to win the war against Japan, do use of the atomic bomb only decreased the length of
For example, the U.S had the choice of using the bomb as a demonstration to show the destruction of the explosive to the Japanese government. (Doc. E) Likewise one might say that the demonstration of a bomb may not have convinced the Japanese to surrender or if the bomb had failed the U.S may have seemed like fools. However, although those are good points the bomb did in fact work and cost many lives of the Japanese. Also before the U.S used the bomb they already had the Soviet Union sending back up to their arms.
The United States decision to release the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was a way to intimidate the Soviet Union. The United States did this by revealing to the Soviet Union what they were capable of doing during war. According to Document 3, Dwight D. Eisenhower did not want the Soviet Union to enter the war. Eisenhower believed that the United States did not need aid from the Soviet Union during war. Also, according to Document
The United States did not want to drop the atomic bombs unless they were provided no other choice. Reviews of the records reveal a tale of Japanese military refusing to acknowledge the full impact of the bomb. They threatened to continue fighting despite their civilians wanting peace (Pincus 2). The hardheadedness of the Japanese infuriated some. “Japanese must surrender or face the rain of ruin from the air, the like of which has never been seen on this earth” (Pincus 2).
Dropping the atomic bomb on Japan was not a quick decision. The United States had tried to warn Japan numerous times before about the type of weapons they were capable of using but Japan refused to pull back. According to the Memorandum of the Use of the S-1 Bomb, “Japan should have some preliminary warning for say two or three days in advance of use.” The bomb was no surprise to Japan. They were given three days to decide whether or not they were going to continue fighting. Japan knew the basic extent of U.S. power, regardless they still decided to continue the war against United States, so they
Up until that moment, there was no weapon greater than the Atomic bomb. The United States had witnessed what the atomic bomb could do and since the Russians and the USA hadn’t been getting along, they were afraid of the Russians creating and using the weapon upon the United States. The mass amount of disaster and destruction that would occur for the citizens of the United States would be gigantic. The United States worked and did everything they could to prevent this from occurring. The Rosenbergs, who were a non-communists family, were falsely accused, convicted and executed for conspiring on giving secrets of the atomic bomb to the USSR.
The atomic bombs were dropped with purpose of solving diplomatic reasons and to inevitably make Japan surrender. The diplomatic goals the US had at the time was to prevent Russia from joining the war against Japan, but the US wanted to win the war before the USSR joined in order to prevent Stalin from claiming land in Japan and spreading communist influence throughout Asia. So in order to impede the potential spread of Russian influence and communism in postwar Japan, the US had to end the war as soon as possible or else the potential spread of Stalin and the Soviet Union’s influence might bring forth more devastating and graver consequences for the future of the US. The atomic bomb was a diplomatic and intimidating way of keeping the Soviet
There was also the question of time. The atomic bomb was by far the quickest way that America could see for the ending of the war, and they were eager to end the war as before long, Russia would become involved making a heavier casualty rate inevitable. America were also a very powerful country now they had the development of the Atomic Bomb, it would have been a waste to not be able to show their true power and the true destruction they could use through the bomb. There is also the point that the Americans were looking for revenge against the Japanese, as they had injured and killed many American soldiers, and even more to come, had the Americans not taken quick action.
When the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki all living things in a five square mile radius of where the atomic bombs impacted died instantly, it ended the war and saved thousands lives. The following documents tell you about the importance of dropping the atomic bomb and the thinking behind there strategies. The US wanted Japan to surrender and wanted no more bloodshed and wanted the Soviet Union to be surprised. As stated in document 13 the Americans concern for Japan's unwillingness to resign, “imminent threat of a landing, on Japan proper by us, to convince them of the hopelessness of their situation”1. and again in document 16 shares thoughts for Russia involvement, “atomic attack against Japan would shock the Russians”2 finally document 17 shows the stubbornness of “Japan to agree Japanese leadership would probably not have surrendered if the Truman administration had clarified the status of the emperor when it demanded unconditional surrender prolongation of the war and cost a large number of human lives”3. Although some people think dropping the atomic bombs on Japan wasn’t justified, I think that dropping the atomic bombs on Japan was justified.
The politics and strategic side of this bombing story had just as much turmoil and drama as the actual bombing itself. When America was making its atomic bomb, other countries like Great Britain, Germany, and Russia also had the idea to create an atomic bomb. However, the U.S. was the only county to make them because they had the manpower and resources to make these bombs. Like mentioned before, some government officials, including President Truman, believed that dropping the bomb was not a bad idea. These people thought it was beneficial to drop the first bomb for both Japan and the U.S.. They believed this because the U.S. had planned an invasion of another Japanese island, and if the
During World War II, President Harry S. Truman ordered for an atomic bomb to be dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima on August 6th ,1945. The second and last atomic bomb to ever be dropped was in the city of Nagasaki on August 9th, 1945. Many Americans believed dropping the atomic bomb was necessary to end the war in a more timely manner, however, many others believed dropping the atomic bomb was too extreme of a measure to take against Japan. With the creation of the atomic bomb, the United States had a weapon of mass destruction that no one else yet had. Therefore, with the power the atomic bomb possessed, some people believed its use should only be used as a last resort. If Japan would not surrender during this war, then the United States would have a valid and necessary reason in using the power of an atomic bomb. For the other Americans that believed in the immediate drop of the atomic bomb, dropping it would end the war sooner, which would then decrease the amount American soldiers who would be killed during the war. Whether dropping the atomic bomb on Japan was the most ethical decision that President Truman could have ordered is still debated.
“ The atom bomb was no ‘great decision.’ It was merely another powerful weapon in the arsenal of righteousness.” This quote was said by Harry S. Truman the first President who used an atomic bomb. The program that was able to create this monstrous power was known as the Manhattan Project. Creating this weapon was their main priority. The United States was in the midst of World War 2. The atomic bomb is considered to be the main factor that ended that war. It was a race against the multiple enemies of the United States, to be the first to acquire this power and use it when necessary. The Manhattan Project was kept strictly confidential and, created the foundation of the future and more powerful nuclear weapons to come.
In the 1930’s and the 1940’s there was a change in American leadership. Having this change not only changed the outcome of the war that we were currently in, but how the rest of the world would view our country after the war. The decision that Harry Truman was forced to make on the choice to drop the atomic bomb or to attempt more land invasions was a choice that shaped the outcome of the war. There were major influences and side effects from the dropping of the atomic bomb and what it did to the country of Japan. Having the option and the weight of the moral decision weighing on Truman’s shoulders about what decision should be made, he was the only one who was capable of making the decision that shaped the outcome of the war. Having dropped the bomb on Japan, as a statement of power and a means to an end in a form was the only way that American lives could have been spared as comparing that to the lives that would have been lost in a land invasion. Knowing what the issues with the bomb was; one has to look at the moral issues, the results of the incident, and also how it played in the rest of the development of the world.
When President Truman authorized the use of two nuclear weapons in 1945 against the Japanese in the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to end World War II, the nature of international security was changed irreversibly. At that time, the United States had what was said to have a monopoly of atomic bombs. Soon thereafter, the Soviet Union began working on atomic weaponry. In 1949, it had already detonated it first atomic bomb and tensions began to heat up between the two countries. With the information that the Soviets had tested their first bomb, the United States began work on more powerful weapons1, and a fight for nuclear superiority had begun.
