The pursuit of beauty is an interest of mine that has been cultivated through this class. The philosophy of Aesthetics has left me curious to see how those near me have experienced and perceived their own beauty. My curiosities led me to want to see the works of local artists via the arts districts of Oklahoma City. So, I began to search for where to find their pieces.
After a few days of research and contemplation, I chose to view DNA Gallery; a local art gallery that features native artists. The gallery had several paintings from various artists. I walked around, spending a good amount of time studying the pieces that I found interesting. Some of the works were over one-thousand dollars! I made sure to keep my hands to myself. Some others casually strolled through the exhibits along with me, taking quietly amongst themselves. An elderly man, who I suspect played some part in the management of DNA Gallery, sat quietly outside of the building’s front entrance, able to view all on comers. There was a bit of ironic tension between the paintings and I. The room seemed to be so quiet on the surface. In fact, even the weather was incredibly still and mild that day. All felt at peace in my immediate surrounds.
However, the paintings themselves cried out to me. I felt overwhelmed by the immense creativity and depth that leaked out of the artists’ works. Awe struck my mind like a well-sounded bell. To this day it puzzles me how a human can create such individual, original works of
In art, there are qualities that speak louder than words. It expresses many different messages and emotions and each person has an experience different from the next. In this paper, I will be discussing two artworks I encountered. The piece is a good example of how people can encounter different experiences in one piece. I attended the Orlando Museum of Art a while back with family and overall enjoyed my experience. On my visit, I found the museum quite impressive and felt a deep connection with specific pieces.
Upon entering the room, visitors’ eyes dart to that mysteriously empty frame centered on the opposite wall. In such a painstakingly designed museum, this frame looks out of place. On these walls hang the memoirs of revered artists, but the empty frames scattered throughout remember something more tragic: the largest property theft in world history (Menconi, 2012). Head of security at the Gardner, Anthony Amore, refers to these empty frames as “placeholders, not memorials” and urges visitors to see them as a “testament” to their belief that they will reacquire the stolen paintings someday (Menconi, 2012). Whether they do or not, the 1990 Gardner theft greatly impacted
When I attend the Oklahoma Art Museum this morning, I was completely blown away by the different styles, technique, and artistic abilities that artist have. Art can come in many forms and can involve many different things. From paintings, sculptures, and abstract pieces of the modern world. Along with my visit, I got to experience a new collection of blown glass that was absolute remarkable. As I walked though the museum, it was as I walked though time and got to see how each period’s art changed throughout time. From the different shades of color to the different types of technique that filled the halls of the Oklahoma City Art Museum, each piece was genuine in its own way. I was starstruck as I witnessed Lowell Nesbitt’s Parrot Tulip, Richard Diebenkorn’s Albuquerque, and Dale Chihuly’s blown glass.
The subjective element of beauty involves judgment, not opinion. Many people feel beauty is only something seen by the eyes. St. Thomas Aquinas views beauty in both the supernatural and natural orders. Aquinas lists the attributes of beauty to be found in nature. These are; unity, proportion, and clarity. We will see how these attributes of beauty are seen through the eye and felt by the heart.
17. On my museum experience, I took it in like every other visit to the museum I have ever had: much like other children expressed wonder and amazement at a circus performance or sports game; I was awestruck and mesmerized by the colors, the atmosphere, and the same restrained joy that I felt evident in the eyes of all the other observers. My girlfriend and I made our way through the museum, blending in with crowds of other viewers to see Cezanne, Gauguin, Brueghel, O’Keefe and the like in the permanent collection, making time to go from one end of the spectrum to the other. But my heart has always had a soft spot for
I could understand art beyond others’ opinion about them. Moreover, I realized that it was a
Last year, I visited the Menil Collection located in Houston, Texas. Overall, the general atmosphere of the museum was very dignified. When observing the illustrations, the only sounds audible were the wood floors creaking as each step I took increased. As with each step I took, a tacitum guard placed in each room had their eyes set on me and followed me as if they were my very own shadow. I was a bit intimidated, but I understood they did not want an incident such as the vandalism act in 2012 to occur once again. Despite the uncanny tone at times, I felt as if the formal ambience helped create an attentive connection with the artwork and I. Once adjusted to the silent atmosphere and presence of the guards, my sole focus jumped to the paintings
The artist’s choice of words makes it clear that he viewed the eruption as an awe-inspiring, sublime experience that had attracted other artists, philosophers and even art lovers in some aspect, despite all its greatness and horror.
Art is an object or piece of work that brings one pleasure. Art is also something you see or feel and you cannot even begin to describe the ways you like it or how it makes you feel. Art is something that portrays beauty and happiness. Art lets you see the world through another person’s perspective. Most art seems to tell a story about where a person has been and the things they have encountered along the way. It lets you connect with the artist and see things through their eyes. Art is a way of expressing one’s self without words. When I think of art, I think of paintings, portraits, sketches, and sculptures.
Beauty is something that can be interpreted completely different from person to person. A famous quote that goes along with this perfectly is “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” I think a person’s inner beauty should be taken into account when deciding whether or not a person is beautiful. Wikipedia’s definition of beauty is, “a characteristic of a person, animal, place, object, or idea that provides a perceptual experience of pleasure or satisfaction” while Oxford Dictionary states, “beauty is a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially sight.” As you can see, inner beauty could be paired with Wiki’s definition and outer beauty could be paired with Oxfords. Of course, there
The most important trait in defining art is its beauty. As complex as the term “art” can be, the term “beauty” is nearly just as complicated. In order to understand art more clearly it is important to understand beauty. “We label an object beautiful because it promotes an internal harmony or ‘free play’ of our mental faculties; we call something ‘beautiful’ when it elicits this pleasure.” (Freeland 8). As defined above, beauty is not a direct message. It is something that subconsciously allows man to feel good and pleasurable. There is “an internal harmony” when we observe something beautiful that allows us to take away a deeper understanding of a work of art regardless of it being “nice looking” or “ugly”.
As onlookers peer into the artworks in front of them, there is no question as to whether or not they considered what the artwork means, where it came from and what the artist was interested in who created it. The
After getting over my initial reluctance, I got butterflies in my stomach. This was only the 2nd time I’d been to an art museum, so I wanted to make the most of it. When we first arrived, we looked around at some paintings. I visited an exclusive temporary exhibit of Edvard Munch which included a surprising amount of paintings of naked women. Nothing caught my eye in the first few galleries, but then I stumbled on an exhibit called “In Character” by Nam June Paik. As soon as I walked in, I got embarrassingly excited. I constantly had to stop myself from running around the museum like a madman. All the TV sculptures and simple, childlike drawings had been just so incredible to me. The piece that I really enjoyed the most was a sculpture called “Self-Portrait.”
Life consists of constant cycles of spontaneous outbursts of joy and unexpected disappointments; there is an upside to this repetitive tug of war. On this rock we call home, we are surrounded by the most gorgeous creations, structures, and landscapes that add a touch of serenity to our miserable existences called aesthetics. Aesthetics as an adjective is defined as concern with beauty of the appreciation of beauty. As a noun it means a set of principles underlying and guiding the work of a particular artist or artistic movement. The surrounding beauty that we take for continuous granted is significant towards our existence. In everyday interaction, we straddle the line between aesthetic judgement, where we appreciate any object, instead
Have it your way at Burger King. In that case, I’ll have a body about twenty pounds lighter with a butt and breast enlargement please. Wouldn’t it be great if we could order the bodies we live in like ordering food from a fast food restaurant? It would be so much easier if we could just choose our own ideal bodies, wouldn’t it? Unfortunately we don’t live in this utopia, and whatever body you’re born with, that’s what you get, so learn to love the body you were born with. As Plato once put it, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” This basically means that everyone has their own beauty and just because you don’t find someone attractive doesn’t mean somebody else doesn’t, or even more importantly, that they don’t love themselves. Because I agree with this statement, I believe that this constant pressure people are put under by society to lose weight and lose it fast, is not only a ridiculous request, but it can be detrimental to someone’s health to suggest they come to Ihop hungry, and leave still hungry, and when so many women are willing to risk their health to have the body that society deems acceptable shows that most if not all women have been taught to hate themselves for not having the “perfect” body. When it comes to body image we must first as people learn to accept ourselves for who we are, accept that the process of losing weight is a process that takes time and effort, and that if you are not a doctor, someone else’s body problems are none of your business.
