One day they pack up all their stuff in cardboard boxes and leave their home to go look for work. They pack up all their belongings, mattresses, clothes, etc. The family then finally then finds work. They move into a very old and uncomfortable environment. The garage has holes in the roof and in the siding from bugs and the bad weather. The family sweeps the nasty dirty ground and starts to unpack their belongings. They put the two mattresses they have in the fair corner of the garage, unpack their clothes and other belongings. The characters brothers and father sleep outside under a tree since their is not enough room for them all in the garage. The next morning they start working, they start picking cotton in the hot hundred degree weather. During the day the girl drinks dirty water and begins to feel sick. In the middle of the day other kids come home from school off the school bus her and her brothers hide from the children since they do not go to school and do not want to be seen. The next day she is very sore from the hard work. Eventually she goes to the local school and gets enrolled. The teacher helps her with learning english and starts showing her music.
