Man’s Ravenous Craving
Hook:
Happiness, the ravenous craving of man yearning to be fulfilled, emerges in our everyday lives and pilots our actions. This perplexing enigma is an emotion extant within everyone, even in times of bleakness or grief. Though people may have differing interpretations of happiness, it is a sensation every human lusts for, through times of both celebration and sacrifice.

Happiness can be attained in numerous ways, those of which vary from person to person, but overall, people attain happiness by doing the things they enjoy: things that give them excitement and satisfaction. For example, after observing his boss’s negative reaction to his assertment that Maman’s death was not his fault, Meursault “stop[s] [him]self” from repeating it to Marie, his lover, because “it d[oes not] mean anything” (Camus 20). Meursault suppresses his beliefs to appear more socially acceptable to Marie, and by doing so, presents himself as more attractive to his lover. By disregarding his inner thoughts, the bond between him and Marie is reinforced as their affection for each other expands, thereby creating more happiness. It is possible for one to achieve happiness without following their beliefs.
