The term “sugar daddy” arose in about 1915-1920, as a term of endearment. It was slang for a man who offered money or gifts to a young woman for their companionship – can range from explicit sexual contracts to casual dates to even being a married daddy’s second partner. Men can also be sugar babies, but it is not as common. Sugaring is a type of relationship in which a sugar baby "provides companionship in exchange for being pampered," while a Sugar Daddy, which is usually an older man with money "pampers Sugar Babies in return for companionship." "Pampering" is a very broad term and can include negotiated financial compensation; ranging from an allowance to a possible investment into a Sugar Baby's business venture — or it could be gifts, trips, dinners and high end clothing. Luxury aside, being in a sugar relationship can be a practical economic solution for young men and women who may not be able to pay off student debt/loans, cannot afford rent, or do not have the means or experience to get a full-time job. If we look back on relationships in American culture, we see that relationships have always had a transactional aspect. Women offered men their ability to bear their children, and a dedication to family and in return, men provided a home, food, clothing, and financial security.
