composition, etc. Like many romantic amalgam, the story posits thick and dark plot lines, while at the same time showing the poetics of romanticism. In the words of Lazzarich, intertextuality in this novel can be seen in the
"evocation of romantic motives, strong emotion and Goethe’s love triangle [which] represent a citational dedication to romanticism and a literary bridge towards the most emotional period in literary history" (Lazzarich, p. 116).
The novel and its real-life museum is a representation of the other side of Turkey, where westernization, secularization, and upper-class lifestyles that exist in the country simultenously alongside the traditional as well as the poorer section of the
Published in 1775, Goethe’s literary work Faust exemplifies individualism, emotionalism, and nature in the protagonist’s gradual escape from extreme rationalism in his life, only to realize that emotion and nature culminate reason. Beginning in the late 17th century, Romanticism was connected with politics to portray people’s fears, aspirations, and emotions (Brians).
Whether pride, fear, or peace, art is intended to make the viewer feel an emotion. The visit to the St. Louis Art Museum had me excited to discover a new revelation. Being the second time that I had visited in two semesters, I was looking forward to a new angle to take, writing about some of my favorite pieces I was unable to include in my last paper. This semester we have been focusing on the Renaissance era (1300-1700), also known as the Rebirth. During this time, scholars and artists looked back towards the classical learning. Purposefully looking past the middle-ages, they focused on the classical past of Rome and Greece. During this time period many works of art were created, however, throughout this semester every major artist we studied
The Labelle Heritage Museum was founded to showcase to the world the rich history, culture and heritage of Labelle and its surrounding areas.
The Field Museum started as a Columbian exposition held in Chicago. Everyone who worked in the exposition saw the effect it had to the people who came to visit the event so a year later, Marshall Field agreed to invest on the museum project (Encyclopedia, 2005). In 1894, the museum was established in Jackson Park, but due to the decision of the committee to change the name, they decided to relocate the museum to Grant Park and leave the museum to be known as the Museum of Science and Industry. It was a struggle to find a new location for the museum, but eventually everyone agreed to build it by the lakefront (Field Museum, 2016). In my standpoint, I would not have made the decision better myself. I believe the Field Museum stands where it belongs. It is located in one of the best area in Chicago. It is near other fascinating attractions such as Navy Pier, Adler Planetarium, and Shedd Aquarium; making it easy for
The Meadows Museum is a public art museum on the Southern Methodist University campus, and it collects a lot of Spanish works. When I was around the museum, I saw many beautiful stone sculptures. When I entered the museum, I felt quiet, serious and professional because of visitors who focused on appreciation of art and staff wore formal clothing. According to the artwork I am most interested in, I will introduce its information, my first impression, and the second impression.
The Museum of the City of New York has allowed people to learn about the city's history. The exhibition New York at it Core exposes people to the different faces that the city has undergone. It is divided into 3 parts “Port City” (1609–1898), “World City” (1898-2012), and “Future City Lab.” The exhibition illustrates the city's long history of immigration and change. First, as a dutch colony, New Amsterdam, follow by being a British colony to the modern city that it is today. The 3 parts are divided into four major themes density, diversity, money, and creativity. These themes are seen clearly in Port City, were density and money play a key point. By 1860 New York was an industrial city. It had become the nation's leading seaport “but also
The discovery of one’s romantic self can take many forms which can encompass the notions of reason, nature and freedom. However, experience plays a crucial role in making this discovery. The individual must delve into nature which is the strongest force encouraging one to invoke their inner emotions without any logical explanation or fear. This allows one to remain free. The following essay will discuss the works of The Sorrows of Young Werther by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and The Prelude by William Wordsworth.
During my visit to Balboa Park’s San Diego Museum of Art, I was able to visit many diverse exhibitions that allowed me to explore the broader definition of art. Among the medieval, religious paintings and the European portraits of high-class nobility, there were several pieces that stood out to me -- such as the selection of colorful, geometric quilts in “Quilts and Color” and the bronze lions sculpted by Arthur Putnam in “Ferocious Bronze”. The quilts were especially shocking to see in such a grand museum, as I was used to seeing quilts in old crafting stores or bedroom closets. However, the use of pattern and optical illusion in the quilts truly made it mesmerizing; the exhibit reminded me that artists choose the medium
Upon visiting the virtual art collection of “The Metropolitan Museum of Art,” (TMMoA), the home page noted that the “Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History,” (TMMoA), had multiple different galleries of art dating from 8000 BCE to the contempory times. Their timeline collection is organized in a chronological format, which I believe makes it very easy to locate different types of art belonging to a certain time period and it appears that no one gallery is more important than another. The timeline I chose was the prehistoric period dating from 3800 B.C.E. to 1600 B.C.E., (TMMoA).
From the start I have found the subject of crime, business, and politics in Chicago to be fascinating, and taking this class has broadened my knowledge and understanding of the way Chicago has and continues to function in the pursuit of money. One of my earliest memories that piqued my interest in the class was the trip to the Chicago History Museum on the South end of Lincoln Park. I found the portion of the trip where we were on the second floor of the museum and exploring how Chicago grew from a small hustler’s town to the booming metropolis that it is now was incredible. I especially liked the portion dedicated to the people who brought major change to the city such as Hugh Hefner bringing about the rise of a sexual revolution in the city
The Museum of Arts & Sciences (MOAS) is the main and largest art, science and history museum in Central Florida. It is found in a 90-acre nature reserve, which is home to around 30,000 curated objects. It is primarily known as home to one of the biggest American art collection in the Southeast. Other than this, it also has a large collection of Chinese Art at the Schulte Gallery and a collection of Cuban paintings in the Cuban Foundation Museum. The rest of the museum has an eclectic collection of displayed railroad cards, automobiles and a collection of Coca-Cola memorabilia in the Root Family Museum. There is a collection specifically for children at the Linda and Charles Williams Children's Museum, a big state-of-the-art planetarium, and
Interpreting historical events is a difficult but necessary part of designing an artifact based exhibit. Opinions can be presented as fact, sentimental perceptions can skew objectivity and politics may influence the presentation. The exhibit objectives must be based on a balanced neutral assessment and allow visitors to develop their own opinion.
In August of 1939 the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York held an exhibition of “degenerate” art that it had purchased titled Art in Our Time. The advertisement for the exhibition, written by an employee from MoMA, made sure to list each piece of art purchased, where it come from, and who the museum and purchased the piece from. The article stated the pieces came from a gallery in New York called Buchholz Gallery, whose New York agent was a German refugee and that each work was in the original Degenerate Art exhibition . Who the museum purchased the works from is important because it shows that MoMA wasn’t purchasing the works directly from the Nazi government. By mentioning the pieces were in the original show could bring more people
Visiting the Museum of Jewish Heritage was quite an experience. The museum focused on Jewish culture before the Holocaust, the war against the Jew during the Holocaust and the Jewish renewal after the holocaust. Visiting the museum was definitely a big eye opener it helped me to realize that I did not know much about Jewish History as I thought I did.
“Plastic,” an art instillation at the Museum of Modern Art, created by artist and choreographer Maria Hassabi, blurred the lines between dance and visual art. I had the pleasure of experiencing this exhibit on March 5th, 2016. “Plastic,” reinvigorated my artistic eye, and challenged my preconceived notions of art and choreography.
