Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, or E. L. James’s Fifty Shades of Grey, but it is a work of literature that revolutionized the art of writing, which continues to influence people’s philosophies, beliefs, and views on life— even roughly after a century since its publication. In other words, the meadow denotes Septimus’s joy prior to the war and the “beautiful” and honorable decision he took to fight for his country, meanwhile the dull sky exemplifies his unstable and muddled mind after enduring the traumatic events of combat. Not to mention, the large, red spot symbolizes the blazing world he now views, and the long paint streaks represent the planes that Septimus observed soar and fill the sky during the war. All in all, Champagne displays how a man who should feel honored for being so brave for fighting for his country, can also be engulfed with sorrow at the same time. Disturbia, a pop song sung by Rhianna, connects the theme of PTSD in the novel with contemporary art and postmodern society. For example, the lyrics “What’s wrong with me? Why do I feel like this? I’m going crazy now...” demonstrate the feeling and thoughts of confusion and stress a person with PTSD undergoes, exactly like the symptoms Septimus is displaying daily: “Suffering forever…he moaned, putting from him with a wave of his hand that external suffering, that external loneliness” (25). Additionally, the lyrics, “It 's a thief in the night. To come and grab you. It can creep up inside you. And consume you. A disease of the mind. It can control you. Watch out, you might just go under. Your train of thought will be altered” is emphasizing how PTSD, is taking away your ability to live a normal life and how it overtakes
