Various themes are presented throughout The Red Lotus of Chastity such as deception, loyalty, and true love. Written by Somadeva, this 11th century short story represents what it means to be truly faithful to one person and how deception can play a role in relationships. Guhasena and Devasmitā instantly fall in love, “but Devasmitā herself, as soon as she had set eyes on Guhasena, was so carried away by his qualities that she decided to desert her parents” (1275) and were determined to remain chaste. While Guhasena is away on business, Devasmitā goes to great lengths to remain faithful and protect her husband. After multiple occasions involving disguises and deception, the husband and wife live happily ever after.

In order to prevent this, the two fast and appeal to the god Śiva in hopes that he will help them. Śiva provides each with flower and said, “Each of you must keep this lotus in his hand. If one of you commits adultery while the other is far away, the lotus in the other’s hand will wither away. So be it” (1275) and with that the Guhasena leaves for his trip. Shortly after arriving, four merchant sons began to notice that the lotus does not fade and plan to get Guhasena drunk so that he will tell them what it means. The sons set off to find Devasmitā in hopes that they will seduce her and she will commit adultery and this is where the first act of deception can be observed. The merchants use a nun to get to Devasmitā, “Reverend Madam, if you can bring about what we wish, we shall reward you richly” (1275). The nun then explains that she doesn’t need money for she has an abundance of wealth through her pupil. Her …show more content…
To do this the nun convinces Devasmitā that her dog is weeping because they knew each other in a past lift, “just now she recognized me from a former life when we knew each other” (1277). The nun explains to Devasmitā that she and the dog were both once married to the same man and that if she hadn’t cheated on her husband she would be a dog too, “that is why I in this present life have the privilege of remembering past existences. But she in her ignorance guarded her chastity, and so she has been reborn a bitch” (1277). The nun justifies being unfaithful because so as not to frustrate the senses and the element, “our highest duty, you know, is to yield to the demands of sense and element”

The documentary presents intrinsic issues facing the child age demographic. The title of the documentary is ‘waiting for superman.’ The title in itself speaks of a sense of hope in an abstract idea that is simply imaginary in nature. The term superman is, in this context, used to describe the education system. The title of the documentary describes the high sense of hope with which children go to school. This high sense of hope is motivated by the ignorance that they harbor as to the actual dynamics of the public school system. The premise should be that no child is left behind. This is with reference to learning in the school system. This theoretical analogy is, however, very far from the actual truth on the ground. The situation is that a lot of children are left behind. An argument can be made from the documentary that all of the children in the public school
In the Red Lotus of chastity, two characters Devasmita and the nun are implementing the same concept from the Machiavelli’s “The Prince”. They followed the Machiavellian concept of being a lion and a fox. Devasmita was Guhasena’s wife and while her husband was far a way from her they promised each other to keep red louts in their hand. Whoever commits adultery in the absence of the other; the lotus will wither away and will be unfaithful. The nun was planning to undo the chastity of Devasmita while Devasmita was trying hard to protect it. Both Devasmita and the nun acted cleverly as a fox. However, Devasmita continued acting like super fox until she rescues her husband from death, while the nun ended up acting like a lion.

The females in The Red Lotus of Chastity and The Thousand and One Nights struggled against ideas of chastity that were created by a male dominated society. They had to over come the cultural ideals of what women should be and do. Devasmita and Shahrazad both decided to take matters into their own hands and not fall to male authority or their tricks. The themes of these novels are the feminine empowerment, loyalty and devotion.
As a beginning of this film, a myth is told by the Nyinba people of Nepal: a story of fearsome spirits thought to kill children and the weak. Their crime was adulterous passionate love and it was this that had condemned them to live eternally between life and death. In this film, we learn about and explore marriages in tribal societies. We can clearly identify the differences that challenge both side’s ideas and sensibilities about marriage bonds.

This function of marriage endured throughout much of human history, even transcending different cultures, so often, in plays from past centuries, marriage plots function not like a familiar Katherine Heigl romantic comedy but rather like a business deal. This disparity leaves modern audiences who grew up on these movies unable to understand the at times strange, clinical nature of marriage in plays such as Goldoni’s A Servant To Two Masters. Furthermore, without this knowledge of the historical practice of marriage, audiences cannot clearly understand the dynamic between fathers and daughters like Pantaloon and

This essay focuses on the theme of forbidden love, The God of Small Things written by Arundhati Roy. This novel explores love and how love can’t be ignored when confronted with social boundaries. The novel examines how conventional society seeks to destroy true love as this novel is constantly connected to loss, death and sadness. This essay will explore the theme of forbidden love, by discussing and analysing Ammu and Velutha's love that is forbidden because of the ‘Love Laws’ in relation to the caste system which results in Velutha’s death. It is evident that forbidden love negatively impacts and influences other characters, such as Estha and Rahel, which results in Estha and Rahel’s incestuous encounter.
