This analysis will look at how historians have attempted to explain the relationship between constitutional and physical force nationalism/republicanism.
In the book Irish Peasants Violence and Political Unrest 1780 – 1914 editors Samuel Clark and James S. Donnelly Jr. suggest, in the opening paragraph, that poverty related rebellion in Ireland became commonplace during the late 18th and early 19th century that led to the ideas of a separatist republic. These events gave rise to, at first, a constitutional nationalist party called The Society of United Irishmen that sought parliamentary reform and to make this change they worked through parliament before later becoming an armed revolutionary group. Focusing on this time period and going on the writings of Clark and Donnelly it could be argued that the relationship between constitutional and physical force nationalism was, at this time, a unified one

Perry Curtis Jr. in his article ‘Moral and Physical Force: The Language of Violence in Irish Nationalism’ points out that constitutional and physical force nationalism existed side by side in Irish politics up until the Anglo – Irish Treaty of 1921. It appears that for a substantial period in Ireland constitutional nationalism and physical force republicanism stood on equal ground until people had an opportunity for their own parliament and then the physical force tradition succumb to constitutional politics. Curtis also alludes to a point made earlier in this piece in how both nationalist traditions shared similar goals despite having different approaches to the issue of British rule. Curtis argues that the relationship between constitutional and physical force nationalism became ’’bound in a close and complex’’ way that had the effect of increasing both the strength of nationalism and the difficulties for Britain in dealing with the Irish Question. The British have reigned over the Irish so long and so cruelly that they have left Ireland in “state of dependence” psychologically, politically, and economically. In other words, the “ideology of Protestant consumption” has “actually eroded” the self-confidence and sense of worth of the Irish so badly that it has left Ireland a nation unable to sustain itself (Mahoney). England is eating up Ireland. But this tribulation cannot be blamed solely on the British. Swift cleverly condemns the British aristocracy for their mistreatment of the Irish people while also criticizing the Irish people for allowing this exploitation.
After the War of 1812, The United States entered a period of intense social, political and economic change. These changes would eventually deconstruct America into two factions that would go to war in 1861. The era before that, 1815-1850, has been given many names. The “antebellum period” and “Jacksonian democracy” are just two of the long list. However, I propose that we pull from one of the most important themes of this era: the ideology of republicanism. Republicanism defined the United States since its beginnings as a mere colony rebelling against monarchial tyranny. Therefore I suggest we name the textbook “republicanism: 1816-1850.”
The Scot-Irish had no support for the British crown because they originally uprooted them from their homes and placed restrictions on their production of linens and woolens forcing them to leave Ireland and come to America. This factors into the American Revolution since the Scott-Irish’s hatred for the
England was in favor of landlords in Ireland due to a good majority of the landlords to be English and that their taxes were benefiting England. This causes bias in newspapers and articles about the landlord’s behaviors which is clearly seen in this article. Historians can read the article and decipher what it was like for these landlords and how much of the article is trying to persuade their readers one way or another especially since it was written by an Englishmen. It is important in understanding the New Departure’s goals and motivations for the Irishmen and the move towards freedom for Ireland. It shows how tenants are willing to fight back against the government which in turn fuels the fire for rebellions and ultimately moves the Home Rule party deeper into existence even with landlords doing everything they can to stay in
What evidence was there that public polices between the War of 1812 and the Age of Jackson supported and enhanced nationalism? Include examples from all three branches of government.
Everybody knows something about the American Revolution. But how many people know about the eerily similar, yet drastically different Irish Easter Rising and subsequent revolution? Causes, leaders, battles, treaties, resolutions, and effects are a part of every country. Sometimes they are similar, and other times not, as is the case with America and Ireland.
French political leader Charles de Gaulle said that “nationalism is when hate for people other than your own comes first,” by this definition turning points in Irish Nationalism can be seen not as what changed as in regards love for Ireland, but what changed hatred for the English withinin Ireland. There are numerous significant turning points in Irish Nationalism; it could be argued that The Great Famine is the largest turning point in Irish Nationalism as it encouraged independence through means of violence as well as cementing a deep-rooted hatred of the English in Ireland. Equally, the failure of the First Home Rule Bill can be maintained as the largest turning point as it led to the decline of the liberals, Charles Stuart Parnell and constitutional nationalism. Alternatively, The First World War can be judged as the prime turning point, mainly due to its short term affects. It split the nationalists, which led to the Easter rising, and increased agitation over Home Rule.
Smith’s (2015) evaluation of the Toronto as the “Belfast of Canada” is important because it defines the existence of a strong pro-Ulster faction of Irish Protestant that received large-scale support from the British government to countermand the rise of Irish Catholicism in the city. In this manner, the term, “The Belfast of Canada”, defines the undercurrent of hostility and social barriers that created such political and social tensions for Irish Catholics in Toronto in the 1860s. This posthumous term defined the existing struggles between Protestant and Catholic Irish tat would be historically compared to the struggles in Belfast:
Nationalism is how one feels toward their nation. Therefore nationalism determines how strong a nation is, by the unity of the people. America was very young as a nation in the early to mid 1800s and was not meeting the standards of the people. Changes needed to be made. Nationalism was changed in America with many great reform movements taking place which warped America to what it is today. Education reform, Industrial revolution, and transportation alongside technological advancements played a large roll in nationalism.
Before the famine in the mid-1800s, “many English politicians and social reformers began to think that Ireland was a nation in need of transformation, that it’s people now needed to be yanked into the modern world by tossing out the old Gaelic traditions” (The History Place-Before the Famine). The English reformers wanted to end Ireland’s “cycle” of poverty and misfortune because in the “1800s poverty was thought to be caused by bad moral character” (The History Place- Before the Famine). The English politicians and social reformers also wanted to change the laid-back lifestyle of the Irish peasants. “ They professed the virtues of hard work, thrift and self-reliance and regarded the Irish as totally lacking in these qualities, a point of view also shared by many British officials and politicians” (The History Place-Before the Famine).
Republicanism: There were 3 different definitions of republicanism that were brought up in the United States. The first form, held by members of the educated elites were influenced by the histories of the popular governments in Greece and Rome, and were believed that republics could only succeed if they were small in size and the same size in population. A republic offered its citizens equality for opportunity in return for sacrifices. A “natural aristocracy,” men who were able to elevate in talent and started from humble beginnings to positions of power and privilege, would govern society. The second form of republicanism, who were also other members of the elite class but also some skilled craftsmen, focused more on economic theory than
Violence, terror, suffering and death. The conflict that has been burning in Northern Ireland seems to be an unstoppable battle and it has flooded over the land of Northern Ireland. The struggle for power and the persistence of greed have fueled the raging fires of the opposing groups. The conflict in Northern Ireland has been discussed continually over the past few decades. Ever since the beginning of the “Troubles,” organizations have been scavenging to find a plan that will cease the violence. Throughout my research for this project, the questions of what are the main sources of conflict in Northern Ireland and why have they continued today guided me to many fascinating pieces of evidence that
Clearly, a large portion of the turmoil experienced during this type could be put down to the changing government of the period. Though democratically elected and in more direct control of the Irish nation, the Home Rule government what the Irish called the Free State in its first years was not as responsive to the people as some desired (Ferriter, n.d.). An effective civil service providing for many needs was set up, but the ruling party and government experienced internal strife over significant differences of opinion throughout this decade (Ferriter, n.d.). The government was a democracy, but a very young democracy, and with all of the problems that this youth entails in a newly freed and democratically empowered nation and population.
The Irish had suffered long before in the hands of the English when Cromwell had been in control and had taken away land held by the catholic majority of the country to members of the protestant minority. This created a large tension among the population with the oppressed majority and the rather entitled minority who by Trevelyan’s snooty tone did indeed see themselves as the superior people in the country. The Irish Famine 1845-1849 “Is ar scáth a chiéle a maireann na daoine” “It is with each other’s protection that the people live” From the Fifteenth through to the Nineteenth centuries English Monarchies and Governments had consistently enacted laws which it seems were designed to oppress the Irish and suppress and destroy Irish Trade and manufacturing. In the Penal laws of 1695 which aimed to destroy Catholicism, Catholics were forbidden from practicing their religion, receiving education, entering a profession, or purchasing or leasing land; since Catholics formed eighty percent of the Irish population, this effectively deprived the Irish of any part in civil life in their own country.
