Study Setting and Design
The analyses presented here used three data sources: the Relationship Dynamics and Social Life (RDSL) survey, the women’s Pharmacy Perceptions and Experiences (PPE) survey, and the Community Pharmacy Survey. Data from all three sources came from one county in Michigan, which is known to have a significant number of black women and to also have a significant socioeconomic variation. Ethical approval for all three surveys was obtained from the University of Michigan’s Institutional Review Board (IRB). Informed consent was obtained from all individual participants included in this study.

RDSL Study
The RDSL study focused on intimate relationships, sexual behaviour, contraceptive use, and unintended pregnancy. The population-representative random sample of 1,003 women aged 18 or 19 residing in a single Michigan county was drawn from public records. The sample was originally interviewed in 2008-09, and respondents were then interviewed weekly for 2.5 years. Final interviews occurred in January 2012.

PPE Survey
The sample for the PPE survey was drawn from the RDSL study. In May 2013, 637 of the original RDSL respondents who had email addresses that were still valid were contacted to participate in the PPE online survey. Three reminders were sent to all non-respondents at 10, 17 and 21 days after initial contact. All respondents received a cash incentive.
