This paper extends the Meaning Triangle (Sowa, 1997) and creates a broad research framework called the Research Pyramid for positioning the current literature and identifying new AIS research questions or ideas. The framework is comprised of four constructs: objects, concepts, symbols, and AIS (component(s)) that are connected along the pyramid’s edges, referred to as primitive mapping. Descriptions of four common research methodologies in this field are presented (design science, field studies, surveys, and lab experiments) and accompany the placement of current literature amongst the four framework constructs as an evaluative tool. Primitive mapping is discussed amongst two construct, three construct, and four construct combinations; emphasis is added that the mappings are bi-directional and therefore the approach taken to examine said relationship should encompass this. An approach to mapping literature to the framework is provided along with steps to take in order to potentially identify areas that have not been extensively covered by prior research. The purpose of this paper is to create a rudimentary framework to expand future AIS research opportunities by examining current literature patterns [topical and methodological] based on broad constructs. In the beginning of the paper the authors take on a broad definition of AIS. They recognize that AIS goes beyond financial accounting systems and is based on the processing of transactions, providing performance
