The fable of “Godfather Death” poses several topics worth discussing. I was particularly intrigued with how it portrays the human compulsion to tempt fate. In this particular example, the protagonist of the story is placed under the care of Death, a being thought to be omnipotent and clearly not someone to mess around with. As a christening gift, Death awards the protagonist an herb that will help any patient of his recover. Death also gave him conditions in which he was permitted to use the herb’s power. “If I stand next to the sick person’s head, you may speak boldly that you will make him healthy again. But if you see me standing by the sick person’s feet then he is mine” (Grimm 13). He continued to warn the protagonist of what would happen if he abused the herb’s …show more content…
“But beware of using the herb against my will, or it will turn out badly for you” (Grimm 13). With this warning in mind, the doctor proceeds to act against Death’s wishes and give the herb to the sick king, even though Death had stood by the king’s feet. The protagonist assumed that he would be forgiven due to the fact that he was Death’s godson. The protagonist got lucky, Death spared his life, but also warned him never to deceive him again. I would like to think that the doctor took this warning to heart, but alas, as soon as a beautiful girl came into the picture, Death’s warning was the farthest thing from his mind. Once again the doctor cheated Death and chose to save the girl’s life in the hope that they would get married and he would inherit the crown. Death was not so forgiving this time. Death made a mockery of the man’s life in the way that he ended it. A story like this makes you wonder, why would anyone choose to try their own life like this? To the protagonist, greed must have seemed an even bigger motivation than the
His main incentive in the beginning is that he does not want to be in poverty, this invariably leads to his fear of insecurity, and he finds a solution. To get enough money to keep him far away from the fear of poverty, doing anything to provide stability throughout his whole life, the outcome of this is
Finally, the reason for Dr. Death’s wrongful action is that he believed every man has the right to die. As a religious human being, I most definitely disagree. Most religions view suicide as one of the greatest sins. The act of taking one self’s life is
When Death had given his godson the herb he also gave him a warning to go with it. “When you are called to a patient, I will always appear to you. If I stand next to the sick person’s head, you may speak boldly that you will make them healthy again. Give him some of this herb and he will recover. But if you see me standing by the sick person’s feet, then he is mine.’
It was not intended to make readers sad or necessarily agree with his decision, however, to examine their own life and situation and to contemplate death, as it is inevitable for everyone. Most people are bound to have to face a similar choice as Clendinen. Maybe not in the same extreme measure, but most people will have to make a decision for a family member who is no longer capable of making medical decisions for themselves. Clendinen achieved his purpose and readers should walk away from this article recognizing exactly what Clendinen’s beliefs are on death, and it ought to make them curious about their own thoughts and beliefs. At the very least, talk with their loved one’s before they ever become ill and find out their loved one’s wishes. Most people are skilled on how to live their life, but how many are taught to embrace the
One of the people’s traits affected by human nature in many stories is greed. As shown throughout, greed is an evil sin. This

“Greed has taken the whole universe, and nobody is worried about their soul.” This is the quote that I find most relevant to this story and sets the mood and tone for everything that follows. It’s nothing new for someone to put their needs and wants before anything or anyone else in their life. The doctor was warned by Death that it would turn out badly if he disobeyed him, but he put his wants ahead of the warning. In the story Godfather Death, Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm demonstrate through point of view, setting, and plot that greed can overtake anything in life and you can’t cheat death.
In the story we see the development of the young man into adulthood and responsibility. He seems to be a fair headed person but once Death begins to give him riches and fame we see that the young man's behavior begins to change. Since it seems that the young man never really has to work for his riches he begins to take his fame and wealth, and his godfather for granted. This is demonstrated three times in the story, once when the king becomes ill, second when the princess becomes sick herself and is in need of a physician and finally when the young doctor is shown his candle of life.
Rachels presents two case examples of individuals suffering from terminal illnesses. The first example, Jonathan Swift who suffered eight years through a illness until he passed; the second example, Stewart Alsop who was a journalist who died of a rare cancer who gave an account of not only his experiences but the experiences of his temporary roommate Jack. Both of these examples given an account of the suffering terminal patients endure and experience. Rachels discusses “the argument from mercy (324A),” which is allowing a patient the right to Euthanasia out of mercy. The first part in this argument is the pain, which individuals who are not suffering from a terminal illness could not possibly understand.
Greed can also be the reason for idiotic and irrational decisions. It influences one’s decisions and could lead to their downfall. One example Irving gave was Tom’s choice to make a deal with the devil. The “black man” told Tom about the hidden gold that was buried in the woods, and a deal Tom could make to get this gold(246). At first Tom rejected the offer due to the fact that he would have to split this fortune with his wife, but after his wife’s disappearance he went back to search for the devil. When he found the devil the terms for the deal were negotiated. Tom would have to trade his soul and open a broker shop in exchanger for the money(248-249). This is where Tom’s greed made him irrational and influenced him to make a bad decision. He made the deal, not thinking of the others he would have to hurt in the broker business and without consideration that his soul will then belong to the devil. Greed made Tom not think rationally and make a decision that would lead to his downfall in the near future. The other example Irvin gave was a greed-based decision that Tom’s wife made the ultimately led to her death. After Tom’s first encounter with the devil he came home and told his wife about his experience and the offer the devil made. Tom’s wife was all for it but Tom did not want to accept his the offer(246). Her greed came into play when she decided that she would steal some valuables and go out and make the deal herself. This greedy decision was

How we go about getting it and what drives us to want it, defines our character. In Game of Thrones, the characters use need and greed as motivation to find contentment in their lives.
The doctor who diagnosed the illness and was unable to cure the disease might become a convenient target. Health professionals deal with death and dying every day. That does not make them immune to the suffering of their patients or to those who grieve for them.
It is argued that patients requesting help with hastening death come mostly from those who have not been treated or diagnosed properly (Asch). “There is a growing awareness that loss of dignity and of those attributes that we associate particularly with being human are the factors that most commonly reduce patients to a state of unrelieved misery and desperation,” (Rogatz). It would be to the doctor’s discretion and expertise to diagnose and treat the patient to the best of their ability, and the patient could seek assistance from another doctor if looking for more
In the story “Godfather Death” the godson of death betrays Death by curing a patient that was meant to die. The Godson, then receives his second chance when Death forgives him because he is family, However Death also warns him this is his only chance. The story “Godfather Death” shows that even the most powerful and wealthy people cannot escape death, this reality is sometimes too much for a person so they chose to ignore the warnings life provides us. This is displayed when the Godson takes the second chance for granted and assumes Death would forgive him one more time, the godson was driven by greed. This is a major fault of humans, many people take others for granted and forget eventually they will grow tired of the deception. Just as Death promised when the godson betrayed his godfather again he showed no mercy. The godson was taken into a cave where all the lights of people’s lives were lit. This cave contained many candles, the shorter your candle was the closer to death you became, Death showed his godson, his candle, it was beginning to flicker out. Death pretended to fix his godsons candle when he begged for forgiveness, but it was not granted when death lets the candle fall and the godson fell to the ground dead.
The Grimm Brother’s “Death’s Messengers” is a short tale in Household tales by the Brother’s Grimm published in 1884. “Death’s Messengers” tells the tale of a young man who saves Death after Death is attacked by a giant and is lying on the side of the road. So in return to the young man helping Death, Death told the young man that he will send signs to him for when he will come for him. In the end the young man became ill but was confident that he wasn’t going to die but then death came for him. My theory for this fairy tale is that you can’t evade death, it's inevitable and death comes for everybody.
