In the last three decades women’s roles in society have changed. We are now seen as more than just a pretty face that can cook, clean, and take care of our children. Throughout history, we have seen more and more of these “gender roles,” and also viewed differently in the past. Women played a major role in prehistory to 1500 CE. So, what roles did women play in society at that time? Were they treated or viewed differently or the same as men this this time? In this essay I will be trying to answer these

From housewives to educated intellectuals, the roles of women in society have evolved throughout the years. Factors such as wealth, status did affect their roles in the 1700s, but overall every woman had their own place in society. The line between male and female was very distinctive. Substantial events such as the American Revolution, played a big role in modifying gender roles. Women impacted the war in great ways. They proved their capability in more than just being basic housewives. Their heroic activity all the way through the war led them both into an adequate and better off state.

The revolutionary Mothers a book that brings to light all the influence women had in achieving American Revolution. The book helps us to appreciate women more than just as a helpmate but as the invaluable ones that took care of the children while maintaining the family assets when the men were fighting for the revolution. The women were able to achieve some vital economic and political roles by petitioning, raising funds and boycotting trades. Some of the women were courageous enough to work as spies while some care for men in the army. Before the American Revolution, women were not a part of politic mostly because they were uneducated. The part of the Revolution with which everyone is familiar was the struggle for independence. Less familiar was the struggle within America to redefine social roles and the nature and structure of society. The ethnically diverse, heterogeneous, patriotic population of the Revolutionary period was unified only in its determination to beat the British Wealthier, better established Americans often fought for conservative reasons. They wanted to preserve their traditional rights as Englishman, which they believed were being subverted by a corrupt British empire The poorer folk joined the Revolution in the hope of improving their station. Many of the regulars in Washington’s army had joined for cash bounties and the promise of land. Other poor people saw the war as an opportunity to realign social arrangements, forever casting off habits of deference, which had been conspicuous aspects of hierarchical pre-Revolutionary America. Women joined the struggle for similarly diverse reasons. As traditional helpmates to their well-heeled husbands, some wanted to provide support and preserve the status quo being threatened by imperial England. Due to the time period, one is raised in there are certain things that are considered to be the norm. In the late 1900’s women had no voice to speak out or give any of their opinions regarding any matters. In those types of society’s, the women are oppressed because the males were dominant. Edna Pontellier from The Awakening by Kate Chopin and Janie Crawford from Their eyes were watching God by Zora Neale Hurston are two women who are oppressed in the society they are brought up in.

Do you believe in gender equality? Gender equality is when one’s rights are not distinguished by their gender. Well, women in the 1700s, faced high levels of oppression. Men overpowered them in every sense. Consequently, they dealt with repression in many ways. In addition, Society placed men on a pedestal of higher importance and this perception made women look inferior to their counterparts. Women fulfilled certain nurture qualities by being caring mothers to their children, and submissive by being obedient wives to their husbands. Conversely, when stepping out of the household, women had to meet specific dress standards created by men. Women did everything they didn’t have any say over. Society placed women in a box and weren’t held up to the same standards as their counterparts, men. Both pieces like “An occasional letter on the female sex” by Thomas Paine and “On the Admission of Women Rights of Citizenship,” by Marquis de Condorcet did an excellent job antagonizing the idea that women were being treated like property and standing up for gender equality. During the 1700’s women’s rights were significantly suppressed; affecting them socially, politically and economically.

I believe the purpose of this article by Jane Addams was to display inequality of gender, men and women. To put into perspective, she describing society in a way that having authority over things not just with men, but with women as well. She is saying that things could have been much better with the involvement with women as well. I agree with statement because organizations and business could have improved if women had the opportunity to express their ideas to better situations. Though women and men share utterly think differently does not means it is an indication for effectiveness. However, this short story was written around the time, women started standing up for themselves, and also fighting for equal rights. Therefore, Mary Freeman uses Sarah Peen to illustrate a strong woman trying to speak up for herself, and fight for her rights. Freeman also introduces us to the character, Adoniram, who happens to be Sarah’s husband. Adoniram’s role in the story appears to be the role of a patriarch because he basically tries to overpower sarah, disregards her decisions, and hinders her from expressing herself. In the story Freeman characterized a true ‘Mother’ as someone who is subdued and docile. Nonetheless, she illustrates that despite the fact that women, in general, are presumed meek, they can still very strong. Freeman believes that women bear the ability to stand up for themselves, and what they believe in. Consequently, this was the beginning of women’s emancipation movement towards reformation. Gender inequality has been the main focus for many centuries through the use of discrimination and oppression women were exploited. Where women had very little rights of their own or a voice in society but made many sacrifices to achieve equal rights whether it be in employment or other areas of inequality.
