The Revolutionary War: Myths and Folklore

Myths and folklore play immense roles in everyday life. Some of these tales explain natural occurrences while others alter our view of historical happenings. The Revolutionary War is no exception to the tampering’s of legends like Betsy Ross sewing creating the first American flag, Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride, The Boston Tea Party
A famous belief that is quite shockingly a simple delusion is the tale of Betsy Ross and her creation of the very first American flag. As the story goes George Washington was traveling through Philadelphia, the home of Betsy, when he heard of her skills in sewing. He soon decided …show more content…

Washington documented the majority of his encounters in a diary. This book was investigated by historians repeatedly, not a mention of Ross was found. It is quite possible that Ross may have sewn one of the first flags though there is no indication that leads historians to believe that she assisted in the forging of the flags design.
It wasn’t until almost 100 years later that this figment even surfaced. The story had been passed through her family for generations, almost becoming a kind of heirloom. Ross’s grandson, upon hearing the story, found it the most fascinating thing he’d ever heard. He shared the soon to be legend with anyone that would listen and those that heard it did the same. Ross soon became a historical figure unlike any other. As years passed, confirmation arose that Betsy had no part in the creation of the flag.
Another notorious tale is that Paul Revere and his Midnight Ride. As the story goes, on April 18 of 1775, Paul Revere received the command to ride through Lexington to the town of Concord. His task was to report to the colonists that the British Soldiers were coming to fight.
