MOCOA, Colombia – People were caught off guard when a devastating flash flood surged through a small city in southern Colombia, but not everyone was surprised. Government agencies, land use experts, and environmental organizations had said for years that Mocoa could face dangerous flooding. Many who lived in the most vulnerable areas were aware of the warnings, even if they didn't heed them. And yet the city continued to spread into the floodplains west of downtown. "Unfortunately, in Colombia we don't have a good assessment of risk, or good land use policies to prohibit people from settling in areas like these," said Marcela Quintero, a researcher with the International Center for Tropical Agriculture, one of the organizations that raised
As I was reading as The Great Molasses Flood of 1919, I was shocked!The closest relation that I could possibly think of that I have seen is the rainfall flood of 2008 in Saline County, Illinois. I remember going outside and wading in water, it was almost impossible to drive and buildings were flooded majorly. “Excess of 12 inches above normal.” (Flood of 2008) When I walked outside, I could not believe my eyes! I didn’t even think it was possible for Carrier Mills to get as much rain as it had
In the Washington DC area, it is not at all uncommon to see flash flood warnings scroll across the television screen, but nothing comes of it other than some rain. This past weekend, however, during Memorial Day weekend, Ellicott City, Maryland, which sits just outside of the beltway, experienced a horrible flash flood. The death toll still has yet to be announced, as cleanup and the search for survivors has just begun. Two waves of intense flooding hit the town unexpectedly, and with little warning. The town is a quaint little area with cute shops and storefronts, which sits in a valley, and the main street cuts a swath between two higher vistas. Several storms had been forecast earlier that day, and heavy rain was expected, but no one could have predicted such devastation, in such a short amount of time. This is the second massive flash flood to hit this area in as many years, leaving business owners, and residents alike, stunned and heartbroken.
During the discussion, several new pieces of information were presented. In this presentation we learned much about Colombian culture in the 1950s. Looking at Latin America at the time we see that violence was at a high with the fact that organized gangs were being established. Because of this we can see how the society in the book so easily accepted the slaughter of Santiago. Also in Colombia we see that they have a strong religions background in the Catholic church. In all religions we see routines, which is why it is also easy for the people of the novel to follow the routines and orders brought on from higher officials.
Colombia was one of the three unique nations alongside Ecuador and Venezuela that rose up out of the breakdown of Gran Colombia in 1830. In the course of the most recent 40 years, there has been a battle to oust the legislature somewhat in light of the drug exchanges all through Colombia. The development does however need backing from military and backing from the essential impacts. Lately there have been difficulties for control of the regions all through Colombia furthermore for the drug exchange. The Spanish was landed with an expect to assume control and colonization and conveyed slaves alongside them from Africa. In view of these reasons Colombia is perceived as expanded ethnics and social nation where every locale
The country of Colombia resides in the northwest region of South America next to the North Pacific Ocean. Colombia is a neighbor to many countries including Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, and Venezuela and is considered the fourth largest country in South America. Temperatures in Colombia can vary significantly due to the difference in terrain across its geography, which ranges from 0-5,775 meters (cia.gov). The variation of geographic features makes Colombia an excellent home for many natural resources, ranging from minerals such as iron ore, nickel, gold, emeralds, and copper, to natural energy resources and fuels – specifically natural gas. Natural gas accounts for a large output of resources and provides around 65,110 barrels of refined
Because so much land is being taken from these people it is sometimes hard for them to have the resources that they once had in order to survive. The land grabs completely change the social and ecominc stance of whatever country that they are in “these land grabs erode local control, often re-orienting production from meeting local needs to meeting global market demands for food, feed and fuel. The impact on a land-based livelihoods--- those of peasants and indigenous peoples whose survival hinges directly on access to land and nature—has been deeply devastating” (2). The people of these countries and Honduras are the ones that get hurt more than anyone by these land
Even though the warnings were dire many people it believed as if very few in government had heard their calls for help. Below is a partial transcript of an interview with a resident of New Orleans after the flooding happened;
The main ambition of the FARC has been to create upheaval through bombings and political demonstrations (UNRIC, 2016). These rebellions continued well after the Escobar reign and into the 2000s. Demonstrations were put on by Colombian nationals in order to hold the FARC back, but to little avail. However, in 2012 the FARC announced that they would no longer be committing kidnappings and released many victims. It was at this time, though, that they began attacking infrastructure, mainly the energy sector (UNRIC, 2016). The FARC had already been stunting the conservation of biodiversity, playing into the heavy deforestation in Colombia because of the illegal drug trade, and holding Colombia back from fulling taking advantage of their resources by making many areas of the country no-go areas due to the threat of violence. After over 200 attacks, however, the FARC began to deteriorate and talks of a ceasefire and peace were on the
On August 23, 2005 hurricane katrina hit land a lot harder than U.S. citizens ever thought would happen, reaching wind speeds up to 174 miles per hour and endless rain. One of the most impactful events of this hurricane would be all the water damage done to the houses and landscapes. “More than 50 breaches of the levee system lead to flooding that eventually
With a thousand miles of coast to the North and eight-hundred miles of coast to the West, Colombia has some of the most beautiful beaches. On the North side is the Caribbean Sea and the West Pacific Ocean. Although, we know it as Colombia its original name is Republica de Colombia (Kline, Harvey). You may think, that is a Spanish name, well you are correct. Colombia is named after nun other than Christopher Columbus. Colombia is a originally a colony of Spain, therefore, taking all of the Spanish language, religion, and cultures (Kline, Harvey). Although, it is known as a Spanish country their minorities consist of European and African ancestry. Therefore, a lot of their geography is based off of this.
The Pantheon was a roman temple that was dedicated to the Gods. It was actually the only ancient building that remains intact, and at this present time it is a Catholic Church. The Pantheon has a huge hole at the very top of it, where the sun could light the inside of it. This 27 inch hole also helped with the engineering problems with weight as well. Personally, what I found to be interesting is that right behind the holiday of Christmas, Halloween time brings in ten billion dollars of revenue each year, and that there is a relationship between Halloween and the Pantheothon. Also, in 609 the Byzantine Emperor Phocas gave the Pantheon to Pope Boniface IV, who ended up dedicating it to St. Mary and all the Christian martyrs. Which, this came
Floods are common natural disasters that occur all over the world. Flooding has devastating impacts on the lives of people who are affected by the disaster. Floods can ruin crops, demolish homes, take innocent lives and cause many other types of hardships. These disasters can also leave people with a financial burden and emotional effects. Studies have shown that floods have led to various sickness and health complications. This common disaster has recently taken place in the state of Louisiana. Louisiana has been suffering from an enormous flood and has left people without homes, without food, and without personal belongings.
The United States has been a heavily involved in Latin American affairs for a long time, and there is great controversy surrounding how good of a neighbor we have been. As the “Colossus of the North”, this country holds enormous power. The question is; have we used our power for good or for evil? At times, we have been generous to Latin American countries. We returned the Panama Canal to the Panamanians and created free trade with Mexico through NAFTA. However, the negative impact we have had outweighs the good. Time after time, the United States has put dictators into Latin American countries out of the fear of growing communism. We have meddled, taken the situations of our neighbors into our own hands with force, and vilified them for situations like the drug trade dilemma that are partially at the fault of the United States. Due to the selfish overstepping upon Latin American governments, our discrimination and blame upon immigrants and foreigners as well as patronizing actions like the Cuban embargo and the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine, the Colossus of the North has historically been a poor neighbor to Latin American countries.
I am the opposition and I am against human experimentation.I am against human experimentation because it harms people.I say this because multiple people have been murdered by these experiments for over the past 100 years.In the experimentation people have been saved,but the experiment could have had a sin affect that affected the person. The sin affect could then go extremely wrong,and could lead that person to death.
With one cursory overview of Ancient Greece and its diverse topography, it only stands to reason that ruling the related multitude of distinct poleis scattered throughout its territories, might require different forms of governments, as well. In fact, befitting of such a landscape, Greece employed a variety of unique ruling structures within its collective borders. The principal five forms, to be further examined here within, were monarchy, aristocracy, oligarchy, tyranny, and democracy. (Brand, n.d.)
