First and foremost, I would like to thank you for your service to our country, and in particular, this great state of Florida. As an immigrant, I can truly offer my admiration for the natural beauty of the Florida coast, and as a resident, I am incredibly grateful for the tourism revenue that beauty has brought us.
That being said, I think it is vital that we protect the environment that our state depends on. According to the World Resources Institute, Florida is the state most vulnerable to sea level rises, which is a direct effect of global warming. (Berry et al.) This presents a more immediate threat; viruses are easily spread and are difficult to contain in any one city or region. If we don’t act soon, we could face an epidemic that would completely isolate Florida from the rest of the country and would cost us billions in aid and tourism dollars. Naturally, sea level rise is not the only issue facing our climate; gas and oil leaks present an ever-growing threat as we continue to sell and mine our resources at the expense of the great state we call home.
As Governor of Florida, it falls upon you to lead this state to prosperity. Partisan politics aside, you are called to do everything in your power to serve the best interests of this state, and I truly believe that is your intention. Foremost, the health of Florida’s climate should be at the forefront of your mind on a daily basis. While money and corporate interests are certainly important from an economic standpoint, we cannot continue to attract new businesses, technology, and jobs if we cannot offer a sustainable environment for business investments. While cities like Tampa and St. Petersburg are experiencing tremendous growth, we cannot count on the growth to continue as we keep experiencing more extreme weather patterns and flooding with each passing year. We have to take action to protect our state immediately, regardless of federal support.
