The Ritz is a symbol of alcoholism in Babylon Revisited, that supports the theme of change. The Ritz is a bar in Paris that Charlie used to go visit as a young man. Its purpose is to establish an obvious change that happened while Charlie was gone. It also develope character by making him dwell on the past mistakes he made with his wife and daughter and drinking. In the first mention of The Ritz bar after Charlie's return to Paris, it is described as “strange and portentous” (Babylon Revisited, 272), The Ritz holds a lot of meaning as implied by the well-chosen word portentous. The Ritz seems to be fairly empty, as “only a singled, bored voice” (272) is heard. The alcoholism makes him feel alone, especially after he lost his wife and stopped
In the poem Babylon Revisited, one of the few addictions Charles Wales had was towards alcohol use. When Charles first arrived in Paris he let his addiction of alcohol blind him. He took to the streets of Paris,
Alcohol is the most commonly used addictive substance in the United States. One in every twelve adults suffers from alcohol abuse. In the book The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls Jeannette’s father, Rex, deals with a drinking problem. His drinking problem is one characteristic that makes him crude and un-relatable to the reader. In the novel The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, Rex Walls is an unsympathetic character. The reader finds evidence of this in the story through the ways he cannot keep a stable job, his drinking and gambling problem, and how he steals from Jeannette and his children. Rex Walls is a terrible father.
Andrew Jackson was a self-proclaimed advocate of the common man, and his terms as president from 1828 to 1836 were characterized by many positive and negative changes, often concurrently. The Jacksonian period marked both an economic recession and opportunity, and simultaneously an attempt to champion the rights of the common man, with the concrete evidence of greater voter percentage, but less political rights regarding those officeholders. The economy changed when a relatively stable economy was plunged into the Panic of 1837 and the recession, while the west opened up to white settlement after the Indian’s forced removal. The political rights of the common man largely stayed the same from before to after the period (though rights decreased

Knowing the historical context of a work is crucial to understanding both its general meaning and its deeper essence. Often times, authors use their works as outlets to freely express their personal feelings toward a social trend or issue. As such, the time in which a story is written can have a strong influence on the message the author is trying to convey to his or her reader. Their personal reflections can be asserted in many ways; among the most common being through the characters themselves and their development throughout the work, the setting, and the implied themes.
When drastic times occur and sweep one of everything they own, do they have a plan of action? Will they be prepared for a life without power, resources, and stability? Many times when people are faced with this situation they find themselves unprepared and unable to live in such conditions. They lose the connections with the world, the water they drink is likely to get contaminated, and the scarcity of goods is a threat to themselves and anyone left alive. Everywhere around them there is death and destruction leaving them isolated in their own dystopia. Pat Frank’s Alas, Babylon illustrates a nuclear bomb simulation. In such a way, he gives the readers a taste of isolation and survival needs when facing such drastic times.
As the political landscape in the United States continues to include increasing levels of immigration reform and border security rhetoric, an understanding of current capabilities and operations becomes a vital component when forming an educated opinion. Army National Guard soldiers and aircraft provide a crucial layer of border security, employing the UH-72A Lakota helicopter equipped with technology designed to assist law enforcement agencies in drug interdiction and undocumented immigrant apprehension. Shortfalls in United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) capabilities opened the door for military involvement to stem the influx of illegal immigrants, as well as slowing human and drug trafficking (Lawson, 2012). Today, the UH-72A
Second, another effect of depression is resulting to alcohol abuse. After Taz’s brother dies, he is unfortunately kicked out of his house. Driving recklessly for hours, Taz goes back to his brother’s death spot. He takes out a couple of bottles of vodka and drinks two of them in one go. After finishing the two bottles, he says,” It’s all my fault.

The main theme in the short story “Babylon Revisited” is that you can’t repeat the past. Charlie has a lot of hope for the future, but his guilt from the past catches up with him. He tries to forget about the Paris he used to know, but memories from the past haunts him throughout the story. His past is inescapable and he has to pay great debts when the party comes to an end. “Babylon Revisited”, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald was published in 1931. The story is greatly affected by the time period it was written in, and by what was going on in Fitzgerald’s life.
Scary literature is powerful in the sense that it can cause readers to be on the edge of their seats, keep them up all night, and leave them even more attracted to the allure of fear. In Edgar Allan Poe’s Gothic short story, “The Fall of the House of Usher,” a man visits his mentally-ill old friend, Roderick Usher, and experiences unordinary events following the death of Usher’s twin sister Madeline. Another spine-tingling short story is “House Taken Over” by Julio Cortazar, which falls into the category of Magical Realism and is about a pair of siblings who are driven out of their grand home after a mysterious entity takes control over it. The genres and settings of “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “House Taken Over” share several of the same elements but also differ in numerous ways.
“Civilization is a method of living, an attitude of equal respect for all men.” - Jane Addams. This quote directly relates to the thematic statement because it shows how the real meaning of civilization is having a large respect for the value of human life. Connell and Browning use symbols and characterization to support a theme that being civilized is having respect for human life.
