The Ritz is a symbol of alcoholism in Babylon Revisited, that supports the theme of change. The Ritz is a bar in Paris that Charlie used to go visit as a young man. Its purpose is to establish an obvious change that happened while Charlie was gone. It also develope character by making him dwell on the past mistakes he made with his wife and daughter and drinking. In the first mention of The Ritz bar after Charlie's return to Paris, it is described as “strange and portentous” (Babylon Revisited, 272), The Ritz holds a lot of meaning as implied by the well-chosen word portentous.
