The rocking horse is short story in which we could see how our world works, how people think and how people die, this story is about a child called Paul. However, in a certain way, this story is about us too. We all are Paul, living at his house always hearing those whispers asking for money. The house represents the world in which we live, a world in which money is everything. The most profit we made the most happy we would be, that is what capitalism is about. “And so the house came to be haunted by the unspoken phrase: There must be more money! There must be more money! His mother told him that she is unhappy because his father is an unlucky man. She blames the father who has expensive tastes. “one who was always very handsome and expensive in his tastes, [and] seemed as if he never would be able to do anything worth doing.” She confides in her son that she is dissatisfied with her husband. The mother sets in motion the boys’ futile quest to please her, to be the man she wants him/her husband to be. The mother represents the consumerism of the capitalist system. The belief that money can make us happy and if we are unlucky we will never be fully satisfied. This system is build around money, if we are wealthy we would be happier. However, in the story the mother lives in a huge house with servants but her continuous desires for material possessions is what really makes her unhappy. Paul is raised in this economic system, he is looking desperately for values in this cash culture. At the end Paul dies trying to fulfill his mother desires. Paul represent the common people, those who would sacrifice their well being in the quest to obtain money. Lawrence was trying to explain how people would die just for the money, forgetting that money is worthless without a life to spend it. It is just a paper and we are the ones who give it value. Furthermore, if we are dead we do not get to spend our money, so why we should die for a piece of paper. At
