In literature, a symbol suggests that there is more meaning than what it appears to be. In the short story “The Rocking Horse Winner,” D.H Lawrence uses many symbols that relate to the story’s theme and lets readers apply this to their daily lives. Symbols such as the whispering house, the rocking horse, and money allude to a deeper truth found in the text. The story not only relates to the emotional toils Paul’s family encounters, but also brings awareness to the realistic run-ins the world faces today. “The Rocking Horse Winner” is a tragic tale about an overly materialistic mother who is compulsive about money. She feels no instinctual love for her children and as a result, her son Paul attempts to earn her love. The word money is an echo throughout the story. Representing obsession, greed, and despair, the loss of an ideal family and the lack of value for her children, is the major theme of the story. The family of five’s house is described as a pleasant garden-home, made up of valuables, and also has servants. The house itself has a repeat of "There must be more money! There must be more money!" Symbolically, the rocking of the horse could represent the parallels of life and death/ God’s intervention. It continues to rock back and forth between hope and reality. Taking care of his children, God feels the mother will destroy Paul as she did herself.
