The producers of the 2006 film “She’s the Man” sought to dissect the difference of treatment towards males and females through requiring their audience to analyze the male and female dynamics. Through the use of having one person pose as two separate genders, they create the ultimate comparison. This is done through making the female version of the character a debutante which symbolizes a very girly representation. When viola poses as her brother, Sebastian, she is free enough to be more open and accepted into the soccer lifestyle. Giving prominence to the contrast between femininity and masculinity proves how gender is learned and is only bifurcated because people in authoritative roles create the juxtaposition. There were more women behind the creation of this film. Thus a seemingly more understanding of what societal standard pressure the gender roles learned early on and carried throughout adolescence and into adulthood. The adults in our lives that push these notions of what the norm is for men or women, mothers, coaches, frenemies all factor in on the choices we make as individuals. The writers seem to be seeking equality by creating such a scenario. Women in film can relate to women in sports …show more content…
The hyper masculine character Duke and Hastings briefly erase gender rules while having the same reaction to a tarantula, screaming and jumping into each other’s arms, but Duke immediately realizes how unacceptable it is to be “girly”. Violas portrayal of a rugged, nonchalante masculine person that is incapable of feeling, emotion turns out to be a feminine male that is questionably “different”. Once Duke feels betrayed by sebastian for hooking up with Olivia an extreme feminine character, his feeling are hurt. Boys having and feeling emotions, sharing with each other and being more than what Viola thought to be what women generally think of
Proving someone wrong and feminism are the two main themes in this film and they are shown by the individual characters and the baseball team as a whole. On an individual basis, an example of proving someone wrong was shown by Kit Keller, a young baseball player who was basically only on the team because her talented sister wouldn’t leave without her. Kit had that feeling of being her sister’s shadow nagging at her the entire time and one day when Kit was put on another baseball team, she pushes herself to prove that she is her own great baseball player and not just “Dottie Hinson’s little sister.” At the end of the movie Kit proves her sister wrong by winning against their team at the last inning by not only hitting a high pitched ball, which Dottie told Kit she shouldn’t hit at the beginning, but also proves the world wrong by showing that she is talented and made it on the team because of that. Feminism is shown throughout the movie too by the baseball team showing that woman can do anything that a man can do and that they should be equal. In the movie you could hear people, like the coach, saying thing like “girls can’t play ”baseball.” They showed that they could play just as great, and maybe even better than some men. Baseball shows both themes in this movie because baseball is considered to be a man’s sport, but by playing in this
Continuing to brain wash the young men today with the “sports is a mans world” mentality only helps to repeat the cycle of nearly oppressing women in the industry. It keeps men feeling secure when it comes to their masculinity, yet making a woman’s fight for respect a never ending struggle.
There has always been that stereotype of boys being more athletic than girls. The gender segregation of sports reflects more than just physical differences between men and women. It reflects the way men think about women and sports. When someone throws a baseball in a nonathletic way, a friend would yell, “Stop throwing like a girl!” Being reminded of this
“A League of Their Own” is a very impacting movie that depicts the impact of women in sports throughout the 1940s. During this era, men were away in World War II, leaving the women to take their spots in many of their duties. Baseball had been a very well known sport throughout the country. Women playing baseball was unordinary, however it quickly grew to be very popular which led to the inauguration of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. This was a way for the women to get out, have fun, and relax with other females. The film presents several traditional gender stereotypes and female limitations in sports, some which still exist today.
The concept of gender is evolutionary and difficult to define, though it can be argued that traditionally females have been predominantly defined by their desirability, and males by their masculinity. The way a director presents gender in film can either inspire social change and conversation, or alternatively it can further reproduce social norms. In the case of the film’s discussed in this essay, it is clear that Baz Luhrmann captivates a younger audience and intentionally uses actor selection and the presentation of gender to transform a well-worn Shakespearean story into something new and evolved to inspire a younger audience. On the other
Midterm Essay Sara Selph The Matrix is a science fiction action movie that was written and directed by Lana and Andy Wachowski. This movie was published in 1999 and it was a big hit. The main character in this film, Neo is argued as being masculine, which is shown a lot in a male character in films. However, the woman character Trinity is also preforming masculinity in this film.
The sports world has been a new area where women are recognized. In previous times women’s sports were almost non-existent. In schools many girl teams did not receive adequate funds for uniforms and equipment. Boys sports were much more popular, such as football or basketball. If a girl wanted to play a guy sport she would be labeled as a
Through the movies viewed in this course this semester, we saw women who were able to play against men and still keep their femininity. Nothing is lost when playing sports not traditionally meant for a particular race or gender. Society must become more understanding when it comes to the sports different types of people play and hinder from stereotyping anyone when they participate and perform well in that sport.
For as long as can be remembered, men and women have been placed in specific roles in society. Both have been given a set of rules they are expected to follow and a set of stereotypes they are expected to fit into. For the most part these roles were, until rather recently, strictly obeyed. However, while there are still expectations and stereotypes today, it is more common to see individuals from both genders breaking the barriers and exploring options outside of the limits. Visible through the contrasting class systems, Sophie Treadwell’s 1928 play “Machinal” and Clare Boothe Luce’s 1936 drama “The Women,” are both perfect examples of the ways in which women begin to break the societal expectations.
The most prominent woman figure in this play is Linda, but the male characters in this play also give us insight into women’s roles and help feed the feminist analyses
What Is Masculinity Today Masculinity is a characteristic that most guys would like to have. It is virtue, strength, heart, and courage. More words to describe masculinity could be added to that list, but what others think masculinity is is different from person to person. Opinions of masculinity are also changing as time goes on. Masculinity has been associated with qualities that are manly, like ruggedness, vigor, or strength.
Women have struggled for more than two centuries to be taken serious as professionals. There should not be a double standard in sports especially if it is loved and played by both genders. Over the years, females have competed against the stereotype of being too fragile both mentally and physically to play strenuous sports. The passion and work ethic of the female professional athletes is just as strong as the males and everyone should be treated equal and be able to have a chance at making a better living for themselves as well as their family. One area that still faces a continual struggle in sports is gender equality. Female
Based on the film, I can see that society has changed the meaning of the "masculinity," to a whole new level. This film has taught me how in today's society, boys don't feel safe expressing their personal emotions and personal struggles, because they are afraid, afraid to violate the boy code and subjects them to shame and ridicule if they express themselves. This is something I never thought about before, I did not know the male is going through so much struggle with everyday basis because of the society's expectation on masculinity. This film wants us all to start freeing our boys/men to become more emotionally expressive, so boys/men can live the life for better. I believe throughout the years, the meaning of masculinity has become so negative
In the last one hundred years women have made tremendous inroads in many facets of life. Of that there can be little doubt. Women may now hold jobs, own property and participate in professional sports. Today women can compete in sports, once a vestige of male domination; there is now room for women in that arena. But even today women in sports are not portrayed in the same light as their male counterparts. To a large degree this is because of today's cultural ideal of women.
With Shakespeare being born in the sixteenth century, there were still three centuries to go before women started the feminist’s movement. However, with his storyline in both The Merchant of the Venice and Twelfth night, the females leads disguised themselves as males to accomplish what needs to be done. Both plays, shows the heroine choices which challenges the characters they interact with. These endearing characters shows similar and different traits. The focus of these plays was based on Portia’s and Viola’s ambition which showed Shakespeare’s respect for women.
