The Role Of Outsiders In The World Of Popular Culture

I am an unattractive, because of my moles, overweight, female, senior African American. Living in my neighborhood this description does not have a negative effect on me, because most of my family looks the same way. Outside of my home the situation is different especially when applying for a job. The only way to be worse would be if I were homeless. We would like to think that our socioeconomic status, education, age, physical appearance, handicap and gender, to name a few, would not be a factor in evaluating a person, but hidden biases make them so.

Just how unnatural or strange are humans? You think of the outcasts in society and wonder just why are they considered outsiders. Are they really outcast or are they simply just misunderstood human beings. Some of our most brilliant people in the world were outcasts and strange, but overall they were seen as downright weird. Why do humans have to name these people we do not understand? Sometimes individually think of outsiders as people with mental disorders ,but many people with these disorders are geniuses such as Lewis Carroll. Outsiders remain simple misunderstood people because most of them are geniuses.

The way our culture has a tendency to view other individuals by there appearance will probably never change. In some way everyone has it set in his or her mind what makes a person "perfect". These characteristics include personal appearance, wealth and intelligence. We do not always get the chance to get to know a person, but rather make assumptions. Two poems, which reveal different perceptions of someone, include Richard Cory and The Barbie Doll.

Society has a tendency to misjudge individuals based on their appearance. In S.E. In Hinton's book, The Outsiders, society often judges people by their appearance. An example of this is how people treat the Greasers gang versus how they treat the Socs gang. People see the Greasers as people who would break the law and the socs as people who would not do anything wrong, all because of how they dress and even how each group dresses or has their hair.

Everyone looks different from each other . Some are considered more attractive than others . This has caused many problems in our human race . This is because of the judgment of people based on their outward appearance . This actions caused many problems and are shown by the characters in the stories read this semester . Those characters were victims of been judged because of their outward appearance . This result in different types of effects such as being Stereotyped as a criminal , Also not been accepted because of who they want to be . Another effect is that some have lost their self-confidence .

In the essay “Why Looks Are the Last Bastion of Discrimination” by Deborah L. Rhode, she portrays the stereotypes hardships which are faced by certain people. She wants the audience to know how the stereotypes can cause suffering. The way certain people appear can cause people to have certain view point towards them due to their look. Discrimination is generated in people’s minds due to the physical appearance of a person. She wants the people to know that discriminating others because of their race, religion, color, and gender should be stopped. Anyone is allowed to roam the streets and feel free. But they may not always feel protected or safe from the mean things that others want to say. I think that this can also relate to judging someone by what’s on the outside instead of what’s on the outside. Many people are really quick to judge someone of make up things about someone just because of what they look like on the outside. Little do they know is that the person they are judging is such a nice kind hearted person. A lot of people try way to much in order to fit in just because they want to feel

Even though it’s common to judge others based on appearance, these judgements are not always accurate.

People will judge others solely based on their physical appearances. In the short story, “The Story of my body,” the author, Judith Ortiz Cofer comes to relations with this. She describes how she was victim of judgment because she was a kid whom looked different than most American kids. Ortiz Cofer tried to change everything about who she really is just to get by for the day without being judged. She was labled different, all she ever wanted to do was to be like everyone else. This eventually led to her being depressed. Within the story, Oritz Cofer describes how terrible she was treated due to her Puerto Rican heritage and skin color, and how she would never be able to fit in.

People may look at someone and judge them on their appearance or how they act. In reality most people have many great aspects about them on the insides, and what is on the inside is

We live in a society that is solely focused on appearance and how we look to others. Look at the people around you and what is the first thing you notice? You might see their hair color, skin tone, and their clothing. Though while you are doing that you could be making silent observations. Why do we do that? People say away from the people who “look dangerous” and people will like the people who are attractive. Though when it comes to judging appearance it’s something that is a part of our lives. Even in the supermarkets, we distinguish good products from bad products based on how they look. We are apt to choose good-looking products because they don’t have flaws, cracks, and bruises. I have chosen to write a text about how we are so quick to judge other people based on our first impression of them. There are people all around the world that are trying so hard to fit in.
