Houston is one of the largest cities in the United States and is considered the energy capital of the world. As a result, pollution is another concern for the area. This is the ideal of ideal places for a chemical engineering major because of its prevalence in the surrounding area. Because of this, I want to do research on alternative energy sources, optimizing fuel consumption or even ways to take polluted particles out of the atmosphere. Houston is the fourth largest city in America behind Nevada and ahead of New Mexico. Now that is big. People that are born in Texas are natives, and therefore Houstonian. There are several races that call Houston home like Hispanics, Asians, Blacks and Europeans. There is also a refugee population in Houston from places like Afghanistan, Iraq, and Somalia. However, any person that lives in the culture and experiences the culture to the extent that they consider themselves native can also be called a Houstonian. Houstonian is not a term. Houstonian is a way of life, a culture, and an identity.
Though humanity still has developed industrial systems, there have been laws and social norms put in place to protect the environment. Odum discusses fuel-powered systems in industrial areas, “they require so much energy and create so much waste heat and pollution, that they have an enormous impact on the other two environments.” In 1993, this was true since the primary use of energy was coal, oil, natural gas, all carbon emitting energy sources.
