Sex Trafficking in India VS in America
Sex trafficking generally involves the forced prostitution of women, sometimes it falls on men as well, often children. Many times the abuser uses mind games to force the victim to have sex with them; some of those being promising marriage and a family if they do as they are told. Another thing that the traffickers tend to do is off the victim or the victim's family accommodations or services in return for prostitution. Jennifer Mandel stated, “Uneducated, marginalized, and discriminated against, these women may be lured by traffickers promising employment opportunities abroad (Mandel, 2012-2013).” This states that the traffickers do not only get lured in by promises of accommodations, but of other employment opportunities.

In the year 2015 there were 122 sex trafficking cases reported in Michigan; 152 human trafficking cases reported all together (NHTRC, 2015). In Michigan sex trafficking is the most common form of human trafficking and are usually arranged through an online ad. Females make up over 83% of the sex trafficking victims, men are less likely to become a victim of sex trafficking because they have many more options for work than women do. At least in Michigan that is the case, many jobs women are not capable of due to either strength or other qualities that men
Human Trafficking is often referred to as, “a form of modern day slavery”(Deshpande and Nour, 2013, Sex Trafficking of Women and Girls). At any given time, there are numerous traffickers and their victims. Each victim has their own story, their own personal way they were trapped. Some are lured into it, some are sold by the very people they trust most, their families. Some are immigrants, some are everyday citizens, some are children and some are teenagers. All of them have one thing in common, none of them expected this horrible fate. Unlike most forms of prostitution, these girls never consented to being a part of this dark world(Deshpande and Nour, 2013). They were brought into this life by their pimps and forced to have sex against their will. A troubling statistic from the article, Globalization and Human Trafficking outlines how prevalent human trafficking is among females; “There is a general agreement that the majority of persons trafficked are female, perhaps 80 percent”(Jones, Engstrom, Hillard and Diaz, 2007, p. 107).
On decemeber 18, 1865 slavery was abolished by Abraham Lincholn why has it become so easy for women and children to have their rights taken away from them? Many can argue that slavery doesnt exist in our society today, yet women all over suffer from slavery as they are taken and forced into the sex trafficking business. If slavery were truely abolished why is it so easy for women and children to become worthless and traded for a few dollars?
This article provided an overview of relevant issues surrounding contemporary sex trafficking, including risk factors. The article estimates that 600,000 to 800,000 men, women, and child are sex trafficked every year. It also explains three main factors that play into sex trafficking: human rights, migration, and security. This article exemplifies women’s lack of agency in relation to their bodies. Although there are male sex workers, there are many more female workers, further exploiting women’s sexuality. This aids in the fear women grow up and live with; the fear of being sold.
Biljana Meshkovska, one of the authors of the article Female Sex Trafficking: Conceptual Issues, Current Debates, and Future Directions, reports, “According to this United Nations protocol, human trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons, by means of threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation” (381). She records that 600,000 to about 800,000 females, males, and minors can become victims yearly (384).
However a majority of the girls are abducted or forced while many are attracted in other ways. Fake agencies sometimes posing as massage agencies lure in women into the trafficking industry. These women are offered money, free transportation to these agencies to work, with an agreement that the costs will be paid back through the woman’s earnings for her work (Hodge, D. 2008). Other girls are lured in through brothels, escort services, hostess clubs, and strip clubs (Kotrla, K. 2010) where they are abused, manipulated, and have been forced to participate in sexual acts against their will.
As mentioned before human trafficking has been an issue in the United States for many years; but where do we start when it comes down to, “why this problem isn’t resolved or human trafficking rates are not lowered?” Well, we should look at the similarities of the adolescent females who are targeted which is looking at the risk factors of these females. After reading the article titled, Human Sex Trafficking in America: What counselors Need to Know, there were three main areas where risk factors were mentioned. Those three areas were: the environment, the socioeconomic background, and the education of the females and their parents. Before discussing the risk factors in an environment, I want to point out, there are some females who chose
Despite the government’s efforts to end human trade by creating organizations like Salvation Army and acts trying to prevent it, they have yet to succeed. One of the main causes of sex trafficking is the inability of the government to establish beneficial ways to prevent such an awful crime happening in the United States. The government should be focused on this problem until it is solved. Innocent people and children are getting abused and he government has failed to put a stop to it. Creating acts and strengthening the consequences is clearly not enough, they need to do more. As Jonathan Todres claims in his article Taking Prevention Seriously the government has put prevention on the back burner. The United State is a country that other
Sex trafficking is a problem that sweeps across the nation. The number of children and teens on the street makes them more at risk of being taken into human sex trafficking. According to the Covenant House Institute, more than two million kids in America will face a period of homelessness. As many as 20,000 kids are forced into prostitution by the human trafficking networks every year in the United States
Human trafficking have become more significant in modern society. Measuring the extent and tracking the numbers of people trafficked yearly is difficult due to the covert operations of human trafficking worldwide (Shelley, 2010). Shelley noted that trafficking are often committed by discrete ethnic groups that are difficult to for foreigners or outsiders to penetrate (Shelley, 2010, p. 4). Europe is currently facing an increasing migration of illegal immigrants from the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, with an estimated 400,000 people entering Europe each year (Shelley, 2010). Human trafficking and human smuggling in the U.S. is composed of young sex trafficking victims, and are often native born (Shelley, 2010). One of the problems of human
In America illegal crimes are committed every day. One out of the three most frequent illegal crimes committed is sex trafficking. Sex trafficking is a major issue throughout the world. Most of the victims in sex trafficking are American-born. Not only women are considered victims of sex trafficking but also men can be forced into a life of sex trafficking. Sex trafficking is considered modern day slavery. The number of victims that are minors is one-third of the whole total. The United States has been trying to end Sex Trafficking to no avail. No matter what laws are set in place pimps find a way to get around the laws all together.
Human and Sex trafficking in the United States is the newest form of slavery. Traffickers use this form of slavery to help with the illegal act of smuggling drugs and selling people to gain money for sexually acts. Sex trafficking has easily been compared to slavery. People are kidnapped from their homes, schools, and work to become a slave to pleasure people. They are forced to work many jobs as they are to be sold to businesses or owners to work for little to no money. Unlike slavery in the 1600’s, race does not matter. The only thing most would care about is the age or sex of a human. This is never a choice among people to sell themselves unless they do not have a “pimp”, this is force. There are many types of sex trafficking which is very
In order to help young women all over the world get the tools they need to get an education they need help from already developed countries. Devolved countries can make organizations to go educate these children in order for them to be more educated so they can provide for themselves (A life Wasted).
Human trafficking has been a dangerous industry in the united States for many years. Human/Sex trafficking is a form of slavery that involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of sex or labor. In the 1980’s when The Slave Across the Street by Theresa Flores took place and in the 1990’s when Girls Like Us by Rachel Lloyd took place, sex trafficking was a foreign term to most Americans even though it was a practiced activity. The National Human Trafficking Resource Center stated that in the United States there were more than 4,000 sex trafficking cases reported (Alvarez). On the years following that number has grown tremendously. "The Department of Justice has cited the legislation after a bump in trafficking investigations
There are several factors to why human trafficking exists: poverty, governmental instability, natural disasters, addiction, and organized crime are just a few. Although there certainly are men victimized into trafficking (particularly forced labor), women and children are the most vulnerable to trafficking. Generally, those who become prey to traffickers are poor, weak, ill-educated, or isolated woman (3). Some recruiters befriend teens and adults with the intent of exploiting them. Deceived with the promise of a better life, young women travel with them into unknown territories. Once they reach their destination, traffickers burn their passports and immediately force them into sexual labor. Raped and beaten, girls are chained to beds and are repeatedly forced to serve up to forty men a day. In several low income communities, fathers and mothers will sell their children due to an overwhelming amount of
“43% of victims are used for forced commercial sexual exploitation, of whom 98% are women and girls” (UNGIFT). Women and girls are ensnared in sex trafficking in a variety of ways. Some are lured in with offers of real and legal work in restaurants, massage parlors, or anything else. Others are promised marriage, education and a better life. Still others are sold into trafficking by boyfriends, friends, neighbors or even parents (SOROPTMIST). Many of the girls and women are also forced into pornography. With all of the types of sexual exploitation comes abuse. Sexual, physical, and emotional are all types of abuse put onto females in human trafficking. Many people traffic others in hopes of getting money, work done, or just pure pleasure.
