THE ROLE OF SUPERVISOR SUBORDINATE GUANXI IN THE WORKPLACE IN CHINA Wong et al. (2003) illustrate subordinate supervisor guanxi as "the connection among a subordinate and their direct supervisor, and this description has the sense of 'social relations' based on common interest and advantage." Guanxi is moreover described as "a quality liaison that verifies the proper conduct and action to one another". There are two major types of guanxi. Foremost take in relationship by birth or blood, particularly those of family relations, which is a significant base for guanxi in customary China. The other one is individual guanxi, which is frequently expanded through social dealings and contacts, like the superior subordinate guanxi. Yang (1995) set the reciprocity values in a Chinese social ethic as used to guanxi: (i) When a person proposes goodwill it must be acknowledged; (ii) When a favor is offered one is compel to return it; (iii) One must try to return the favor at the appointed time; (iv) When asked for goodwill, one must comply (at least in part); (v) One must wait for the favor to be given back not asked for its return.
