What should be the role of environmental managers in their organization’s environmental sustainability and social responsibility efforts?
2. Which other departments or functional areas within an organization are best positioned to collaborate with environmental managers on these efforts?
The results suggest that while the embedded role of environmental managers in the organization positions them to collaborate with several other departments or functional areas on sustainability and social responsibility efforts, their abilities may not be fully realized. Beyond technical and regulatory compliance-related efforts to manage environmental impacts and prevent pollution, environmental managers may be underutilized. The concept of sustainability is broad. The
Brundtland Commission, chartered by the World
Commission on Environment and Development
(1987), defined sustainable development as
“development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” While this definition is widely recognized and accepted, it does not provide clear direction on its application or the roles and responsibilities that the various functional units should play in an organization. In this work, sustainability is considered to be a combination of “social responsibility” as set forth in ISO 26000:2010
Guidance for Social Responsibility (ISO 2010) and “environmental
This recommendation is offered in strong support of Ciara Johnson’s application for the Johns Hopkins University Environmental Science and Policy program. I was Ciara’s field instructor as she pursued her MSW. As such, I have had extensive opportunity to assess Ciara’s research abilities, and believe that she is deserving of this exciting opportunity.
In 1992, the Rio Earth Summit declared “The right to development must be fulfilled so as to equitably meet developmental and environmental needs of present and future generations” and in order to create sustainable development the mindset of the individual would need to be changed (Jick & Peiperl, p. 473). When organizations are open to new ideas and welcome transformation it enables them to meet the demands of the current and future environment, (Abbas, 2014). Thus, in 1998, before the merger of PwC and Coopers and Lybrand an opportunity was given to two alums of AIESEC, Middelburg and Shaw to deliver the following initiatives.
On Thursday’s morning Gina McCarthy gave a lecture for different classes of political sciences. Gina McCarthy was chosen by President Barack Obama in his first year as president as the 13th administrator for the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA mission is “to protect public health and the environment”. In other words, its mission is to provide clean air, clean water, safe and healthy land, and stable climate for the people. She believes that, “If you don’t have a good environment you won’t have a good economy”. McCarthy walked her way through being the face for EPA by working all levels of the government and by abrogating for children’s health. She assured us that even though you think you don’t have power everyone has the power to make a change even though it seems insignificant.

Firstly, the company’s management staff did not take into consideration the effects of environmental pollution resulting from past oil spillages. Secondly, the company’s management staff was unsustainable and lacked transparency. He wanted to change the troubling past of the company as a way of restoring its public image, increasing transparency and competency at the management level, and promoting growth through the adoption and implementation of the biofuel alternative program known as going green at Petrobras (Spector, 2013).
The environment and the health of the surrounding population go hand in hand. The Environmental Protection Agency takes on this ever so important mission of protecting them both. The mission statement of the EPA states, “The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Small Business Programs is to support the protection of human health and the environment by advocating and advancing the business, regulatory, and environmental compliance concerns of small and socio-economically disadvantaged businesses, and minority academic institutions (US Enviromental Protection Agency, 2010).” The impact of its mission can be defined clearly as it examines the impact of contamination in the air, the water, and the land on human health.
The author successfully incorporates many environmental initiatives and efforts into a comprehensive plan for moving forward. She embraces and encourages these efforts, but argues they are just placing more Band-Aids on a leaky pipe, rather than dealing with the problem at hand, they are just not big or powerful enough. Rather, Leonard asserts there must be a civic engagement part to bring the accountability and responsibility back to the government and corporations (175). Leonard makes a great point, but

The community, business partners, customers/guests, and employees all have low power, high importance. The community expects a high level of quality products and services that provide significance to their area. This includes having both involvement and support towards the community growth. The protection of the environment and a conservation of natural resources is a concern of the
Many firms are learning that being environmentally friendly and sustainable has numerous benefits. (O.C Ferrell, Fraedrich, Ferrell, 2015). This could enable them to increase goodwill from various stakeholders and also save money in the long term. This will mean that they are being more efficient and less wasteful of resources, which will enable them to be more competitive by satisfying stakeholders. The CEO of

Organizations need to be aware of what is going on in their environments that might concern them, and more so, during the planning process. Diverse but overlapping environments ought to be monitored; the macro environment, the industrial environment, the competitive environment, and the organization’s internal environment (Ginter, 2013; Pfeiffer, 1986). At Rapha AL, my chosen organization, the environmental scanning will include distinct internal and external factors that would enable Rapha gain excellent understanding of the current and emerging issues that might affect it, and inspire the setting of clear and achievable goals. In this paper, I will analyze and address the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT); discuss current and prospective customers and evaluate the impact of environmental factors on the organization’s effectiveness to achieve the established goals within the strategic plan. Furthermore, I will address evolving external issues that could influence the strategic plan, evaluate the benefits of competitive analysis and Rapha’s capacity to achieve the strategic goals and objectives in a 3-year strategic plan.
