The Puritans The Puritans were a group of people who were set out to get away from the British colony. They came into America to start a new life set apart from their past experiences in a monarch society. Their intentions were to purify the churches of England of their Catholic way. They are a group who worship the Bible. They expect all other Puritans to know their Ten Commandments. They are one of the first groups to inhabit America. The first actual people were the Native Americans and then the Pilgrims. There is a difference between the pilgrims and the puritans. The difference is that the pilgrims came to America to get away from the Church of England and be separate. They want to separate because they believe that England is violating the rules of the Bible. The Puritans also came to get away from the church because they believed that the church in England still needed further reform. That is why they started their own church in America, so they can make their own rules and be free. The play is about the group of puritans who came to start their church in Salem. In the beginning, there was little talk of witchcraft (Wiggins, 2012). People were starting to grow suspicious of Parris because his slave and niece and a couple other girls were dancing in the woods (Wiggins, 2012). Also his daughter was in a coma and would not wake up. Eventually he decided to call in Hale, who is a professional with witchcraft, to determine what was going on. Although he was said to be professional, later on we come to find out that he was starting to think he was wrong but he keeps that to himself (Wiggins, 2012). Then towards the end after there had been many deaths, he decides to tell them that they are innocent. The judge tells him that many have been hung already, so they cannot stop now because that would be unfair. What this passage says is, they are a group who believes in the bible and worship the bible, and they are strict on witchcraft (Wiggins, 2012). If somebody accuses someone of witchcraft, the only way to live is to confess that you are working with the devil. It also shows how harsh the court is and how they do not let anybody be considered innocent by making them lie to the court or they
In early 1600's, Puritans followed the Pilgrims to America then they landed in Massachusetts bay. The Puritans started the colony because they wanted to escape religious persecution. The only religion was the Puritans. In the early 1600's of, Massachusetts there was only one Indian tribe, and that was the Wampanoag. Puritans tried to purify the Anglican church because they wanted to make services simpler and taking ranks of authority
The Puritans peregrination to the New World was to fabricate a society based on their religious beliefs. They wanted to build colonies that were going to worship and practice their religion as they did. A community that was more morally sound and based off of their view of Christianity. They settled in the New England colonies and established Massachusetts Bay as well as Boston. While establishing their “city upon a hill” they impacted the New England region with their political structure and religious emphasis. Their influence lasted throughout the 1600s and affected the society politically, socially, and economically through their spread of Christianity and morals.
The most known acts of cruelty in the power of the people are the various punishments dealt out by the Puritans. Then you have the Quakers-they weren’t just men appearing on labels of oatmeal bins; they were chosen to be on the label because the Quaker faith projected the values of honesty, integrity, purity, and strength. However, the Puritans and Quakers both traveled to the New World to escape religious prosecutions. John Winthrop, leading the Puritans, wanted a more “purified” state and society, giving them the name, Puritans. William Penn, leading the Quakers, wanted to spread their beliefs through themselves. They questioned leaders, resulting in leading themselves. Both had different views of reconstructing a new society, religion, and government.
Puritans can be found at the beginnings of the English Reformation. In the 1500s England broke away from the Roman Catholic Church and created a new church called the Church of England. In 1630 the Puritans left England in search of religious freedom. The Puritans wanted to leave the Church of England to become pure by getting rid of Catholic practices. The Puritans did not want to completely separate from the Church of England. They wanted to make reforms or changes, but King Charles 1 would threaten the Puritans with harsh punishments if they did not obey the Church of England. So they left England to find freedom in America. The Puritans established the Massachusetts Bay Colony when they arrived in America. The Puritans wanted to base the colony on the laws of God.(“Puritanism”) What Puritans believed about witchcraft, forgiveness, and sin all had an enormous impact on their culture and contributed to the Salem witch trials.
In 1624, the early 17th century, the religious group called the Puritans, settled for the first time in the New England territory. Once there, they chose to inhabit the Massachusetts area. The Puritans were a varied group of religious reformers who emerged within the Church of England during the middle of the sixteenth century, but didn’t come to the United States
A Puritan defined is “a member of a group of English Protestants of the late 16th and 17th centuries who regarded the Reformation of the Church of England under Elizabeth as incomplete and sought to simplify and regulate forms of worship.” Puritan society in America depended on the belief that all members were working for the glory of God. The Puritans did not allow deviations from the strict code of behavior which would not allow any member to have individuality. They restricted any type of entertainment, except that which was endorsed by the church. They worked and worshipped.
The puritans go create the Massachusetts Bay Colony. They didn’t have strict rules like England, people were not forced to go to church, it all seems great. However, there were many issues. Puritans believed in Calvinism, or predestination. This was the idea that everything is preset by God and nothing you do can change your fate. “Nothing a person did in his or her lifetime could alter God’s choice or provide assurance that the person was predestined for salvation with the elect or damned to hell with the doomed multitude.” (The American
To begin with, Puritans were colonists who wanted to seek religious strength. It was a sin and against the law to not attend a church mass. It was also against the law to pursue any type of witchcraft because the was known to correlate
Throughout the colonization of America, many different religions and groups found a home in the New World. One of these religions was the Puritans. More commonly known as the pilgrims, the Puritans are a group of very strict, religious persons. Puritans were English Protestants who believed the Reformation did not rid the church of Catholic influences enough (“Puritans” Robinson).
New England colonies developed rapidly throughout the early 1600s and the Puritans helped found most of those colonies. They were Christian group who fled from Europe to escape persecution from the Church of England and the ruling class. They originated from a movement for reform in the Church of England and came with certain values and ideas. They believed that God wanted them to set a good example that would cause those who had remained in England to reform their “sinful” ways and pretty much wanted to be the example community (The City upon a Hill) (Doc A). Over time the aspects of the Puritan’s lifestyles slowly integrated into American culture like strong work ethics and the importance of education in society. They are part
The Puritans were a diverse group of religious people that sought to purify the Church of England in the 16th, 17th, and 18th Century. Most of the Puritans believed that the church was corrupted and that true Christians should be separated from it. The rise of Puritans started as people began learning how to read and write and as Bibles started becoming more available to commoners, several people started reading the Bible for themselves. Reading the Bible was actually discouraged in the established church.
Puritanism and Government The Puritans were a group of people who are English Reformed Protestants. The Puritans came from England during the 16th and 17th centuries to America. What English Reformed Protestants basically means is that the Puritans, were Christians who did not like the way the church was in England. They wanted to “purify” the Church of England from all Roman Catholic practices hence the name Puritan.
TThe Puritans were a devout spiritual group that left England and traveled to North America seeking religious freedom from the Church of England. The Puritans trusted that the word of God was the law of the land and it presented them with a plan for surviving. Puritans believed in treating one another with respect, having benevolence for the fellow mankind, loving one another as if they were family and God would reward them based on how well they treated their neighbors. The Puritans, who believed all beings must be honorable to one another, hold themselves with high morals in society yet they failed to realize that their actions were not acceptable or Godly like because they took advantage and hurt the natives. They described the natives, as undisciplined savages, beasts and they believed that the natives did not have the right to retaliate. The Natives were certainly justified with their vengeance since their land was being invaded, their way of life was being jeopardized, and they were targets of colonization by the Puritans. The immigrants who traveled land forced harshest treatments on the natives. Everything was taken away for the sake of advancement of civilization, the conversion to Christianity, and displacing of Indian tribes.
The Puritans and Pilgrims have similar backgrounds but yet they were different in many ways. One difference being that Pilgrims used to be Puritans when they came to the New World. The Pilgrims were known as separatists because there were not happy with the division to the ranks in the Anglican Church. According to A Patriot’s History of the United States one huge difference was the Puritans did not want to entirely separate from the Church of England. They wanted the practices of the church to be turned back to simple form, whereas the Pilgrims were known for leaving the church all together and separating themselves.
The Puritans were a group of "congregationalists" that didn't support the Anglican church because the church was too "catholic".They also believed reformation was needed and an egalitarian environment was necessary.
