On the other side of the spectrum there were the Allies. Winston Churchill was one of the great world leaders in the 20th century. Churchill was the Prime minister of Great Britain in the heat of World War II. Not long after becoming Prime Minister, Germany invaded France and Britain. Due to the overpowering forces of the German Army, Churchill had no other choice but to forge an alliance with the Soviet Union and the United States. Although Churchill was not very fond of Joseph Stalin, Leader of the Soviet Union, they were in dyer need of their assistance in order to defeat the Germans. Truman. President Roosevelt was the 32nd president of the United States serving his term from 1933 until he passed away from the deadly disease of polio in 1945. President Roosevelt not only led the United States and the Allied Powers to war against the Axis Powers during World War II, but also led the country during the horrors of the Great Depression. During World War II, Roosevelt was on his third term serving as President. Being the diplomatic man he was he had promised to keep the United States out of war. However, on December 7, 1941 Japan bombed the United States Navy at Pearl Harbor and Roosevelt then decided it was time and declared war on Japan and Germany. Roosevelt aligned with Winston Churchill of Great Britain and Joseph Stalin of the Soviet Union to help fight back against Japan and Germany. After the death of President Roosevelt, Vice President Truman took over becoming the 33rd President of the United States. President Truman was president at the time the two atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima, Japan and Nagasaki, Japan, which eventually brought an end World War II. Stalin was known for his ruling by terror, criminal activity, and heavy interest in politics. Just as Hitler had done with concentration camps, Stalin executed or forced his potential enemies into labor camps. Stalin had originally made a pact with Hitler, but ended up joining forces of the Allies. Britain and the United States during World War II. In 1939 Stalin and Hitler had signed a nonaggression pact. Although Hitler and Stalin had made an alliance, the Germans broke the pact they had originally made and made a surprise attack invading the USSR in 1941. The Battle of Stalingrad happened from August 1942 to February 1943 when German troops approached Moscow, however the Red Army defeated the Germans and drove them out of Russia. Due to the attack Stalin had no other choice but to look to the Allies for help in order to defeat the Germans, and with the help of Britain and the United States, Germany fell short of a victory. During Stalin’s rise to power he became a very controlling individual. He had cities renamed in his honor, history books rewritten to mention his leadership, had full control over the Soviet media, and became the main subject of most things including art, music, even the national anthem. Stalin in later years passed away on March 5, 1953, due to a stroke at the age of 74. His body, which was originally preserved in Lenin’s mausoleum was removed and buried near the Kremlin walls
