Introduction: According to Aliza Krieger, author of the article titled "The Role of Judaism in Family Relationships," because Judaism plays an important role in a Jewish person's identity, Judaism should be incorporated into family-based therapy. Judaism itself is more than just a person's religious beliefs, it is also part of a Jewish person's ethnicity and culture as well. And because Judaism plays an important role in family life, a Jewish family is often influenced in it's beliefs and actions by Jewish tradition, literature, and history. This influence cannot be ignored when it comes to family therapy, and as a result, Aliza Krieger's article explores the nature of a Jewish family and the role Judaism can play when it comes to family therapy methods.
Summary:
"Judaism is not easy to define. [because] it is a combination of religion, ethnicity, and culture." (Krieger 2) There are many different kinds of Jews around the world, from Spanish Jews to Chinese Jews, but, as more than 80% of all Jews worldwide can trace their heritage back to Eastern Europe, Krieger mainly focused on these; called Ashkenazi Jews. (Ben-Sasson 458-465) Due to immigration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Ashkenazi Jews also make up the majority of Jews in the United States as well and are therefore the focus of Krieger's study.
