The Role of the Individual and Society in the Late 19th Century, Nationalism
A young boy of both German and Italian heritage opens a book on his ancestry. The earliest recordable links he can trace from his Italian and German roots are two tribes.
The tribes are very similar in all aspects that he can discern. The German people have the same interests, occupations, religions, and traditions. Identical traits are seen in the Italian tribe. The boy questions, however, if these people can really be his ancestors. After all, he is German and Italian and the tribesmen all identify themselves with present day cities and provinces. Is he Sicilian and Bavarian instead of Italian and German? As the boy reads on he finds out that in

Since the monarchy controlled the government, they could do as they saw fit with the money that the nation accumulated. The King had the most control over the economy since he was an absolute monarch and had no checks on his power. In the case of Germany and Italy, the monarchy wanted to use the monetary gain in order to support a strong military. The purpose of the military, they said, was to protect the new nations from being overtaken by strong countries adjacent them. It was not in their intention to start any wars since they were just getting off the ground as countries, but they needed to feel secure in order to make any headway. As King
Victor Emmanuel of Italy put it, ìGood finances will be the means of re-enforcing our military organization. Our most ardent desire is for peace The monarchies hoped that by controlling the economy and the military, they could obtain the greatest prosperity for their nations and for themselves.
The ordinary person benefited in a different way than the monarchy when it came to building a strong military and economy. The life of the ordinary person actually changed very little. The majority of the population did not stand to see any of the wealth that the country accumulated. The working class man still had a job to do and a living to make, with the only exception being that he was now working as an Italian or German.
My family the Heintzelman family has lore that has come from our ancestry in Germany. Ancestry is a very important part of a person. Knowing who came before you can affect a person greatly. If someone knows the hard work that their ancestors did it can lead to a lot more humility for that person. No person gets to where they are in life without the hard work of the people that came before them, especially in America. Almost no one is a native of American which makes it a melting pot for all cultures, which means knowing your history is important. The hard work of my ancestors I feel is extremely important due to the story that surrounds the last name of Heintzelman. The story of the Heinzelmännchen, which originated in Cologne, Germany, was a legend about elves who would do the chores of the lazy townspeople. Every night when the townspeople went to sleep the Heinzelmännchens would come up to do that work that the townspeople had neglected to do (Kopisch and Thrlet). This was a myth that was started many years ago in Cologne but is still remembered today. The story of the Heinzelmännchens is commemorated in statues that stand in Cologne and through my last name. The story of the Heinzelmännchen has been passed down from generation to generation in my family, as the beginning of our last name and heritage. However, this is not the only way that lore is passed down, we have also passed down our history through our names, as many Heintzelmans have been named after
Budan’s maternal grandparents were originally from Lowell, Massachusetts. His maternal great-grandparents immigrated from Italy when his mother was just a girl. They had chosen the path through Ellis Island in New York City and eventually settled in Lowell, Massachusetts. Budan’s Grandfather spent his child and adolescent-hood there, and eventually joined the Army when he (Budan’s Grandfather) was just eighteen years old. After traveling the world through the military Budan’s Grandfather settled down with his Grandmother and they moved to San Jose, California. And since then they are living together. His parents were both raised in San Jose,
Consumers could get products cheaper and manufacturers made more money from mass production, but more machines like the Bessemer Converter and electric sewing machine (Inventions) meant less manual labor was needed. Manufacturers did not need to hire as many workers since the machines would be able to do it faster. Although machines made everything more efficient, most people could not afford to buy them because they were too expensive, so usually the rich profited from new technology. Instead of concentrating on agricultural goods, the country turned to heavy industry. The steel, oil and other industries were connected by railroads (Batchelor, Industrialization). Banks provided capital for the industries. When people started forming monopolies, they made everything more expensive than they needed it to be and controlled most necessities. The working class had troubles trying to support their families with it, but they couldn’t rely on the corrupt government for help. Because everything could be made so quickly with machines, it made it easier for investors and businesses to earn money quickly. More people were able to get rich. The North was flourishing and the government was investing more. They raised taxes; funded libraries, roads, and schools; and they started investing on railroads. This caused the government to be in more debt than they already were from the Civil
William, known as Bill, was born on July 20, 1921 in Minneapolis, MN. He worked in the plaster/stucco business for over 25 years before working at Northwest Airlines. His wife’s maiden name was Lorraine Mulcahy. Lorraine was born on August 13, 1922 in St. Paul, MN. Lorraine went to college at the University of Minnesota where she got her Bachelor of Science degree and became a dental hygienist. My grandma “Lo” is the genealogy nut in our family. She has searched for birthdates, marriage licenses, and other documents of her grandparents. I called grandma Lo to get some information on my great-grandparents and family stories. I found out I was part Norwegian and I never even knew it! Grandma Lo’s parents were Edward Mulcahy and Olga Shermoen. Her father Ed was born on April 15, 1880 in Minneapolis, MN. Ed worked as a claim agent for the Great Northern Railroad in the twin cities. Olga was born on March 15, 1888 in Hawley, MN. She also worked for the Great Northern Railroad as a matron. Edward was 100% Irish while Olga was 100% Norwegian. This makes my grandma Lorraine 50% Irish & 50% Norwegian. My grandpa Bill was adopted in Minneapolis so his genealogy is unknown. He was told by his adopted parents that he was mostly Irish. If we pretended Bill was 100% Irish, this would make my mom 75% Irish and 25% Norwegian.

What events or trends contributed to the relationship between the forces of Nationalism and Sectionalism?
After the Civil War, the nation witnessed two major social-economic movements: Reconstruction and Industrialization, which changed the country completely and made it one of the greatest industrialized countries in the world. However, it changed not only the country, but also, the society, its way of life and traditions.
This paper summarizes the ancestral immigartion of my primary paternal ancestors. The Thompson surname in itself traces its roots back to Reverend William Thompson (abt. 1598 to abt 1666). Within this paternal lineage are the surnames Willis, Meade, and Stevenson.

There were a couple of main forces that lead to the outbreak of the war. The first force was called nationalism, which is having a devotion to your nation. Nationalism can be a positive force or a negative force. It can unify nations or cause them to compete against each other. During the 20th century nationalism was a negative force. It caused a rivalry between the Great Powers of Europe. The powers were France, Austria-Hungary, Germany, Italy, Russia, and Great Britain. The rivalry was caused by many things. Competition for materials, competition for markets, and fights over the territories were the problems. Some examples of them arguing over territories is when France never got over losing Alsace-Lorraine and Russia and Austria-Hungary both wanted control over the Balkans. These disputes lead to demands for independence among the different ethnic groups. The last force that lead to the war was imperialism, which is where a strong nation tries to dominate other nations. The Great Powers of Europe were searching for colonies to take and this caused them to get closer and closer to war. It made them distrust each other and made their rivalry even worse. The nations of Europe thought that in order to be great they had to have a good military. Every nation except Great Britain had a large and powerful army. Militarism is the policy of keeping an army ready for war. They brought this policy into play because they needed a way to keep track of the army. The policy had just the
In my first paper, the focus was on my ancestor’s move across the Atlantic Ocean and bringing his family after him. My ancestor, Oscar, originally tried to farm the family land, however, the terrain was not suitable for farming. He became a seaman in the Norwegian Navy and worked his way from a deckhand to captain. But Oscar wanted better job opportunities, so he went to America and became a carpenter. Through time, he earned enough money to pay for his wife and five children to come to America. Originally, they were in an integrated area, but they were unable to speak English. Oscar moved the family to a predominantly Scandinavian area. The family kept up with the Norwegian language and it followed to their son. Their son married a Swedish
Nationalism is way of thinking both political and socially to create a community united by: history, ethnicity, religions, common culture, and language. Numerous effects occurred while establishing a Nationalist community, some effects were a long term impact on Nationalism, and other was short term impacts on Nationalism.
Evaluate the political role of Nationalism in the 20th Century- was it more important as a force for unification or disintegration.
(Origin) When thinking about my family and our roots I identify my family’s places or origin as Germany and Ireland. A majority of my family is of German ancestry and the one exception is my grandmother and she is Irish. I identify these too places as where my family came from due to stories that I have hear from family members and to the traits that each member of my family carries. A majority of my family are all blonde hair, with blue or brown eyes which have a lot of similarities to people from Germany. My family as very few of the traits from the Irish side but the only ones the I have been told are that some people in our family freckle a lot
The concept of nationalism is in essence an odd organization that has had significant impacts in world history through shaping the political and social aspects of the society. As an important aspect in the development of the society, the concept of nationalism has basically been analyzed based on its impact on the emergence of nation-states across the globe. In most cases, these analyses have been conducted to determine the influence of nationalism on imperial breakdown i.e. the dissolution of empires. While the actual extent of the impact of nationalism on the imperial breakdown is uncertain, this concept has played a major role in the dissolution of empires. Generally, the transition to nationalism has contributed to significant effects in world history through shaping the political and social aspects of the society.
