In this essay, I will compare and contrast two sculptures:
“The Royal Acquaintances Memi and Sabu” and the “Statue of Gudea”
“The Royal Acquaintances Memi and Sabu” is made from limestone and paint. The figures overall are well carved and well formed, their figures being independent of the stone medium. The clothes and hair are simple and stylized, doubtlessly part of the cultural style and having specific cultural attributes. The figure’s faces are very similar to one another, giving me the impression that this is more representational of man and woman, rather than a realistic depiction of two specific people. The two figures are well balanced, with the limestone giving the piece a soft, light feel, creating a sense of harmony and cooperation

The figure is well carved and balanced. This piece also has stylized clothing and headdress. The face is very detailed, with distinctive features, which looks to me like a specific person. This piece is dark and smooth, very well balanced with both halves of the figure almost perfectly mirrored. There is writing integrated into his clothing. The hands are clasped and eyes pointing front, a stance with cultural significance, but it also adds a sense of depth and intensity to the piece.
According to the description of “The Royal Acquaintances Memi and Sabu” this statue is most likely representing a husband and wife, and would have been used in a private tomb. This statue also has an unusual pose, so it may be a unique piece with no other quite like it. The only way we know the identities of the individuals is by the writing at the bottom of the statue. This statue was private and had obvious personal significance to the owners.
“Statue of Gudea” represents a specific ruler who commissioned the statue of himself for the purposes of public display, and this was one of many statues he made for the same purpose. We know who Gudea is and what he has done because the writing on the statue clearly tells us
This pair figures represent Yuny and his wife, Renenutet seated with rigidly formal posture next to him. This statue depicts a powerful couple that looks straight ahead, with their heads held up and blank eyes widely open. The form of their features and
The subject of this piece is a Buddha named Maitreya. He is a strongly built man wearing a robe that drapes fluidly off of his body. The piece is constructed from gild bronze and was crafted using piece mold casting. Maitreya faces onlookers with open arms and a smile. The piece was obviously meant to be placed against a wall, as is obvious from the fact that the back is left open and is not meant for display.
In the cleavage area has vertical line as well as horizontal on the dress. The detail the artist put into making sure the dress, belt had the right amount of details to catch everyone’s eye who took time to view his figure. The vertical line on the tassel and the knot tie just right to display the left side of the figure waist line. Indicates the figure was a petite woman. The hair is wavy in the front and pulled into a ponytail at the back. I feel there were serval focal points with in the piece after reexamine the figure the three times. Each time something else stood out shifting my focus from the original focal point. There are many repeats of all the lines with in the figure. The artist only has half of the figure's feet and arms expose which displays start and stopping points for the gown. I feel the use of the white marble may display the cold hardness of the figures heart. The smooth texture of the marble gives a life like feel of the figure. The chair has legs of an animal
The era this piece most represents is the Renaissance art in the fifteenth-century Italy. It goes best with this era because of its use of nudity and shape and lighting. Its use of space of sharp edges and sculpture figures. Also the use of lighting shows an almost 3-D like image. Even though this is a print it almost seems like a picture of statues. The artist also used a sense of scale and proportion in this piece. Every statue is differently scaled from the others. The body parts on each statue did not quite fit with the other body parts. Every statue is different in size, stance, and color. Also the background behind each figure is different from the other ones, in its use of color and detail.
The Gravestone of a Woman with her attendant is a sculpture created by an unknown artist and is now on display at the Getty Villa in Malibu, California. The sculpture is of a woman seated in a cushioned armchair, reaching out to lightly touch the top of a box or chest held by her attendant. We can tell from the sculpture that the women is of a higher class because of how her hair is done, the significant amount of jewelry, and the decorated throne that she lounges in. This sculpture is an extremely detailed Grecian gravestone made from a thick slab of colorless marble around 100 B.C.
The sculpture portrays the God of Harvest, Dionysus, with his loyal satyr follower, Pan. A considerable amount of detail when into the carving of Dionysus; the multiple grapevines in his hair, his ceremonial staff Thyrsus, the goatskins and the cup of wine he’s holding are all symbols of Dionysus. The composition is very asymmetrical, and creates a contrapposto arrangement, which is distinctly Grecian (Gardner). It was carved out of beautiful fine marble, which also had another purpose in the way of making this piece of art last for many years. Along with the tree trunk between the two men providing support at the base, and the elongated arms providing more structural stability. The God’s head is even reinforced by his hair to make sure the head doesn’t break off. This sculpture is visually and aesthetically pleasing, but doesn’t serve a useful function, like textiles or furniture. Therefore, it is considered a figurative piece of art, which art that is very clearly modeled after real object or person(s), and is therefore representational
It is a very large piece made from Limestone. Limestone is a sedimentary rock which means it is formed by the accumulation of sediments, and it is very hard. The statue itself is not very detailed and is pretty simplistic. It is a statue of a human body. The statue is 71 in. (180.4 cm) which is
A statue
These sculptures were created together by sculptors and the ritual specialists. This work of art belongs to the motivated class
When examining the statue, there is an old woman bent and weary. Her posture helps clue us in , with her age and health. The figure is dressed in cloth that hangs off her shoulders. She carries a basket that is filled with what we may think are offerings. Then on her head, there are vines that create a band around the top of her head maybe used to signify the festival that was going on during that time. The specific detail that is seen on this statue persuades us to want to know the story of this woman. Doing so, the process involves lots of research about the time and art. During this period, artist begin to introduce more inner beauty than physical beauty. We get to learn more about the structure itself, then settle for what is given and seen.
On the statue may be stains that come from dirt and distort the color. The back and part of headdress is broken so we have no idea what placed on the statue. His headdress has cylindrical shape and has three ropes wrapped around the headdress. This headdress also has a huge round ball attached to the front of headdress, but the ball has a damaged indent so that large piece is missing. Especially watching the middle part of the ball it seems like something were attached, but it looks broken or like somebody carved out the piece. His part of the headdress looks like a staircase shown on either side of statue’s face. The staircase is perpendicular to the arm on both sides. He wear armband that cover his forearm. The statue has a round face and cheeks, big eyes compare to width of face, wide nose, and downturned lip located in center of face like a baby’s face. In addition, the statue eyes open face toward up, so it looks like statue looking at the sky. The sculpture placed his long
The Royal Acquaintances Memi and Sabu statue was used in the ancient tombs and burial grounds of Ancient Egypt. The purpose of the statue was to give the deceased spirits a home and a place where they could received the gifts of food that used to be laid outside their tomb after they had passed away (Metropolitan Museum of Art a, 2016). The Statue of Gudea was used to honour the lives of the rulers in Ancient Iraq. The statue was one of many that were placed in temples throughout the Lagash region of Iraq honouring the great leader (Metropolitan Museum of Art b, 2016).
The two sculptures presented for this assignment are the Statue of Gudea, which dates back to 2090 B.C. (“Statue of Gudea,” 2000) and The Royal Acquaintances Memi and Sabu, which dates back to 2575–2465 B.C. (“The Royal Acquaintances Memi and Sabu,” 2000). Both statues represent people; however, they depict different types of people from completely different time periods and cultural backgrounds. The Statue of Gudea shows the ruler of southern Mesopotamian, Gudea, whose reign was from 2144-2124 B.C. (“The votive statue of Gudea: A formal analysis,” 2011) sitting in a praying position with his hands locked and his eyes forward. He is dressed in what appears to be a lavish robe with an inscription that clearly depicts what Gudea thought of himself and his successes during his time as ruler. The Royal Acquaintances Memi and Sabu represent what is thought to be a married ancient Egyptian couple who are lovingly embracing each other. Aside from looking at
This sculpture is of a women breast feeding her child. The face of the two people is elongated, as well as the breasts of the mother. This is common to all African Art because they wanted representation of what is being expressed. In this particular sculpture, a supernatural power is being called upon. The power has been asked to protect the mother and child, and to
From my observation at the Met, this sculpture is inside a medium glass and space. Also, it is by itself in the glass. It is a three-dimensional sculpture created by modeling and merging hard materials. Next to it there are other deities (Vishnu, Parvati, Ganesh etc.) and sculptors from the Chola Dynasty. The other works near it complements the sculpture as I have stated above they are from the same time period so, they are related to each other some way and
