The Run for Wellness Free 5K run has been an ongoing event since 2011 created by the Houston Wellness Project. The organization was founded in response to the rising necessity for improving community access to wellness programing. The mission of The Houston Wellness Project is to strive to promote healthy lifestyle choices by educating people and communities on a culture of positive wellness education. The Run for Wellness Free 5K is the main event that assist in fulfilling the mission as it usually occurs three times a month in three different locations here in Houston. The 5K run is free event that encourages people of all ages to come out and participate in an event that promotes a healthy lifestyle. There are many sponsors that support the event and help it be free for the people. Some of those sponsors include The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston Marathon Foundation, Ramey & Schwaller, Houston Striders, and many more. Without their support and donations, plus the help of the volunteers, there is no way possible this event would be free for people to come out and enjoy. Furthermore, people participating in the event are free to donate as well, but it is not mandatory.
Being that it was my first ever 5K event, I did not know what to expect when I arrived at George Bush Park. With that being said, the setup was very simple. There was a table in front of the course where runners gave their registration number and got their running bib. Once that was

Healthiness. Fun. Making a change. These are all words that people encounter when they do a color run. In this color run, there will be a bunch of different colors that you throw up into the air! Also, at different spots, life the start, half point, and finish, there will be other colored powder thrown at your/in the air! After or before the run you can buy things such as t-shirts and other fun things to help raise money. Doing this color run will help us raise money and it will help other people make a change. Our color run encourages people to do things that will help make a change in someone’s life, like donating or showing someone some kindness. Then, after you have changed someone’s life, in the smallest or biggest ways, they will hopefully pass it on and make a
First and foremost I would like to congratulate you on winning the 115th Boston Marathon. It must have been tiring. I would also like to answer why you can’t run forever. The main reason why you can not run forever is that the body needs energy. And when you run you tend to lose that energy, which can be regained. In order to regain energy you have to eat food, which provides macromolecules that gives us energy. There are four types of macromolecules, protein, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids. And in those macromolecules there are monomers(smaller sub units that make up macromolecules). First, protein is made up of amino acids and helps speed up chemical reactions in the body. Second, carbohydrates are made up of monosaccharides(simple sugars) that
The Independent Health Foundation has many different events and seminars for people of all ages and do a great job of not only creating healthy habits in people, but also bringing the community together. They receive their funds to run their organization and its programs through administrative grants, other grant money they receive, their sponsorships, and
When people think of health in America, common sicknesses like cardiovascular disease and cancer come to mind. Although these sicknesses are very usual, yet serious diseases, they are definitely not the only health issues prevalent in America today. Organizations such as the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) work to ensure nationwide health promotion of all diseases. In 1979, the Department of Health, Education & Labor initially created the Healthy People program as a standard for disease prevention goals across the US. In its initial printing, the Healthy People program exhibited a "ten-year plan to reduce controllable health risks". In January 2000, Healthy People 2010 was established by the HHS as "a set of health objectives for the Nation to achieve over the first decade of the new century." With 467 specific objectives clustered into 28 focus areas, the 2010 program was implemented to reach all people and health issues across the United States. Of those 28 areas, 10 were considered 'Leading Health Indicators' which served as reflections of the major health
Break out that dusty Santa costume or wear the dri-fit half zip, with Santa hat and beard, provided, and take a charitable run at the Santa Hustle run, based at the Wilderness Resort, 190 Gists Creek Road, Sevierville, TN. The Santa Hustle 5k and Half Marathon draws participants from miles around, a very popular winter event. Proceeds go to help the Keep Sevier Beautiful campaign, associated with Keep America Beautiful. They will also be on hand to pick up any recyclables. Additionally, the Marines will be available to pick up for Toys for Tots. Donors can bring an unwrapped toy for this important charity.
The next interview was of an Asian American family. This is a military family, the father meet, married and brought back to the United States a 23 year old Vietnamese woman. Family is vital to this Asian American family and respect is expected. Over the years, the mother has adapted to some western ways but maintains certain culture values and passed them on to her children. Diet plays a huge part in their health maintenance and protection. The diet manly consists of rice, vegetables and fish. Along with diet, exercise and staying fit is a big part of their ethnic background. The mother stated to me “Don’t you see all the Asian ladies at the gym? We take pride in staying fit.” To them their body is a temple and needs to be cared for. Spirituality of mind body and soul is another significant part of their health. Partaking in meditation, massage therapy and acupuncture are ways to rid the body of imbalance and place it back in balance to fight illness and diseases. Illness may be attributed to organic or physical problems an imbalance of yin and yang, an obstruction of chi (life energy), a failure to be in harmony with nature, punishment for immoral behavior (in this or past lives), or a curse placed by an offended spirit ("Vietnamese Cultural Profile — EthnoMed," n.d.). While this family is westernized in some ways, by going to the doctor and
I had heard about the running club about being advertised through via email. I wanted to see what it was always about because I’ve been wanting to get back in shape. So, I decided to go to the meeting to try it out to see if this would be something that I want to do. The meeting was supposedly held outside of Rinker in the pit. I was actually very excited to go that day because of the anticipation piling up as the time got closer.
Without help from students all over the town, this yearly occasion would not continue. Many cars or other unregistered runners or walkers may come into the race and compete for the first place award. This community race has been going on for
Just a reminder of my St. Jude run I will be doing December 5th. I am still raising money and am very thankful for the donations already given by a few of you I can’t thank you enough!! If you would like to donate I have attached the link below. Just an update on where I’ve been on my runs.. as you all may know a half is 13.1 miles, I have ran up to 12.5 miles, I run 3-8 miles daily during the week days, and I try to do anywhere from 8-12 on the weekends. Cool weather has come and it has been MUCH easier but during those summer days it was not easy and many times I wanted to give up. There were a few things that always stuck in my head and motivated me to keep going: the daily pain, sacrifices and smiles of the children
Even with the financial difficulty. One of the many runners last year quoted "last years' experience was life-changing for her." So many people contribute their time, energy and creativity. It is what keeps the race ongoing and consistent every year. One of my targets is for the proceeds from the race is to cover the expenses. A priority is the course runner safety and to do so is reasonably support them on the course and to provide a great running experience. "I also like the idea of contributing somewhat to the community by providing a health-promoting activity. And I really like the running community. I find them to be a friendly and appreciative people." (Heck, 2017.) With the understanding of the communities and who are living within the communities, the majority is Native Americans. Majority of the Navajo Nation, Natives are diagnosed with diabetes. They are 1.6 times higher in death rate and 110% increase is diagnosed 15-19 years of age on up. Showing and motivating them to come and contribute to the race will hopefully change their lives in some way to become better, healthier and motivated. Many of the young children are diagnosed and helping them would change their future in their culture and keep it strong and going.
Africa is usually thought of a poor continent. A continent pitted by famine, droughts, floods, and sickness. The last Mile Health charity is trying to help the outlook of health in Africa. They are trying to get health care to the rural communities of West Africa, because of several reasons since health was beginning to be worse by the years in the early 2000’s.
The aging of the baby boomer generation is creating the fasting growing population group in human history, the elderly. As a result, economically stable societies are faced with the unprecedented challenge of helping this rapidly expanding population maintain their health, independence, and well-being (de Almeida, Graca, Alfonso, Kearney & Gibney, 2001). There is a plethora of evidence-based research supporting the fact that good nutrition, physical activity, and social participation are essential for the functional and psychosocial health, self-sufficiency, and well-being of aging seniors (Jones, Kimberlee, Deave & Evans, 2013). The purpose of this community-built proposal is to create a health promotion and social participation program in order to educate seniors on a limited income about the positive long-term health benefits of social engagement and good nutrition on one’s health, well-being, and overall quality of life.
We will be hosting our event on Saturday, December 3rd, from 12-4pm at our local YMCA. This will allow time to not only get up and get their day started, but to also have time to get to the health fair event. In addition, they will also have enough time to walk around and explore each booth. This will be beneficial for multiple reasons. With hosting our event at the YMCA, we may be able to inspire individuals to become members of the gym if they choose to take that next step in the direction of a healthy lifestyle. The YMCA also offers various programs for older adults such as the Silver Sneakers program.
