It is the hope of the UN that the standardize system will: • Enhance the protection of human health and the environment by providing and internationally comprehensible system for hazard communication; • Provide a recognized framework for those counties without an existing system; • Reduce the need for testing and evaluation of chemicals; and • Facilitate international trade in chemicals whose hazards have been properly assessed and identified on an international basis (UN, 2011). 3. Chemical Accidents & Their Effects While chemicals have become a part of our daily lives the potential of harm is still there. Part of the complexity is understanding the nature, or make up, of the chemical(s). Depending on the chemical properties, chemicals and substances react differently in certain situations. Due to this, the mechanism of injury varies depending on the chemical and its physical state.
