Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter is a great piece of literature. It explores problems in society that still occur today. It is fascinating to see how the Puritans punished adultery then and the lack of punishment of adultery in our society now. It shows how all the characters affect Hester and what everyone does in the community. It shows that no one is exempt from any type of crime in that town. In Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, he analyzes the characters of Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale and Pearl.
One of the main characters in The Scarlet Letter is Hester Prynne. In The Scarlet Letter, Hester is described as “a comely woman whose pride sustains her through her punishment and for all the years of her life” (Overview: …show more content…

Later on in the book, she is given a choice by Mr. Wilson to have the scarlet letter removed from her breast. She replies with “Never! It is too deeply branded. Ye cannot take it off and would that I might endure his agony, as well as mine!” (Hawthorne 67-68). Meanwhile other people in the crowd are declaring her to speak and give Pearl a father. She still refuses to speak and says, “I will not speak! And my child must seek a heavenly Father; she shall never know an earthly one!” (Hawthorne 68).
While she is in this cottage and Pearl is getting older, she starts a job as a seamstress in her home. Her husband, meanwhile, is practicing medicine and has taken the name Chillingworth and has sworn to secrecy by Hester to his true identity. Her lover, Dimmesdale is suffering from heart trouble and Chillingworth becomes his “round-the-clock” caretaker. Hester knows that because of her actions, her daughter can be taken away from her. This happens once but her daughter stays with her from the help of her lover, Dimmesdale (“Overview: Characters”).
Her history in England and the courage she has helps her face her difficulty in Boston. Because of her courage, she has dignity to take her punishment. With that, she gains inner strength which helps her for the rest of her life. Hester is not afraid of her sin, and chooses to continue wearing the scarlet “A” for a long time.
