The Scholarship Jacket Racism is a well known problem throughout this world. We get judge every day whether its our race, the way we dress, the way we talk, how we do academically, and if were going to succeed in life based on others people way of thinking what success is. The following story that I read is an excellent example of the way people underestimate us just because of our race or where we stand in society. “The Scholarship Jacket” by Marta Salinas is about a young girl wanting to figure out why life sometimes seems harder for her just because of her race and where she stands in society. She went on home and explained to her grandpa what was going on and how much getting that jacket meant to her. She explained to him that it was not only a jacket, but it showed the hard work she had done in the last eight years and that is why they where giving it to her. Then, she let him know the downside of the reward; she had to pay fifteen dollars for it. Her grandpa was kind of confused about the situation. He thought since it was a reward or honor it should be given to her, for free. He asked her “Then if you pay for it, Martha, it is not a scholarship jacket, is it?”(Salinas). Her grandfather was right. Why should you have to pay for something that you earned as a reward for all the hard work you done? Then it is not really a reward. When you earn something in life weather it is a scholarship jacket, a trophy, or just even a certificate or promotion you should be able to enjoy it without having to stress over it or pay for it. Martha was upset that her grandfather refused to pay for the jacket, but she knew he was right. The next day Martha went to school and let the principal know that her grandfather refused to pay for the jacket. This time the principal was looking at her directly and seemed upset at Martha’s response. He was expecting her grandfather to pay for it since he knew Martha’s grandparents had some money because they owned a lot of land. Martha was upset in
