Imagine having a sick family member passionately explain that they want to commit euthanasia. Euthanasia is the painless killing of a patient suffering from a painful or incurable disease. Although this practice is illegal in most countries and states, it still is a prominent option for some within their state. In 2004, The Sea Inside, follows the story behind Ramon Sampedro (Javier Bardem). At the age of 26, Sampedro suffered from an accident while diving into shallow waters of the ocean that left him a quadriplegic. He has fought over 30 years in a campaign that makes euthanasia a happening item in society. Throughout this movie, euthanasia is an underlying theme shown from Sampedro and how that idea can affect the people one loves most in their life. …show more content…

Sampedro wants to die, it is made clear as the movie goes on. However, towards the beginning of the movie, the filmmakers did not make the theme clear. At no point in the movie, no narrator directly states why Sampedro wants to die. In addition, Sampedro himself never has any monologue stating why he wants to pass. Being trapped in a body he resents and a mind that is not capable of loving are the words Sampedro used on why he doesn't want to experience life. To be in the head of a suicidal person or personally coming to terms of why taking their life is the right thing to do is an impossible task. Whether it be my younger age or experiences with other people about the subject, I just find it very difficult to think in that mindset. When someone is suicidal, they will only believe the things they are thinking, so personally trying to reason with them and attempting to change their thoughts is a very difficult task. However, I do believe that the filmmakers realized their audience might feel the same way about euthanasia, so they found a way to influence the audience
