The Second World War began in September of 1939 and was between the Allies and the Axis. It began with Germany’s unprovoked attack and conquest of Poland, and involved Britain and France from the beginning. Its origins lay in German resentment at the terms of the Treaty of Versailles (1919), the economic crisis of 1929-30, which favored the rise to power of Fascist dictators, the failure of the League of Nations to gain international acceptance for disarmament, and the policy of imperialism adopted by Germany, Italy and Japan as a means of acquiring raw materials and markets. As a part of the Treaty of Versailles, Germany had to accept full responsibility for the First World War, which then led up to the outbreak of the Second. The
To say Canada played an important role in World War Two would be an understatement. Canada’s significance in the war will forever be remembered as one of the greatest, and the Battle of Hong Kong is a prime example of just that. The fact that Canada provided troops even with the optional not to, and the struggles the troops endured not only on the battlefield, but as prisoners of war, and the amount of physical and moral support the Canadian soldiers gave to the British soldiers in Hong Kong is proof that Canada was a major contributor in World War Two.

Canada’s contribution in the Allied war effort did not only come from Canadian soldiers, but also from regular, everyday citizens who never saw battle, such as those involved in the Canadian war industry, BCATP, and the Corps of Canadian Firefighters. The Canadian industry supplied a great deal of war materials for the Allies, producing “more than 800,000 military transport vehicles, 50,000 tanks, 40,000 field, naval, and anti-aircraft guns, and 1,700,000 small arms.”6 Canada’s strong war industry was required to produce as much ammunition, weapons, and vehicles as they could in order to defeat Germany, who had great industrial power at the time. In 1939, Canada became the home for major recruiting and training for pilots during the Second World War in an organization called the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Throughout the war, Canada had graduated 131,533 airmen, including pilots, navigators, bomb aimers, wireless operators, air gunners and flight engineers.7 These men would later become involved in the war in the air, and their numbers would greatly contribute to the Allied air superiority. During the Battle of Britain, German air forces relentlessly bombarded London and

WW1 turned out to be a major turning point for Canada both economically and internationally, as Canada got the recognition of a great independent nation. In addition, Canada was one of the principal reasons to end the world war. Canada grew as an autonomy during the world war and essentially they prosper during the 1920s and in the end the key success in Canada came during the 1930s in the statute of Westminster when they got independence as a sovereignty. During the world war, Canadian served overseas as part of the Canadian expeditionary force (CEF), they fought alongside Britain. Similarly, Vimy ridge marked the first time Canadian soldiers fought together as one unit, independent of British forces, and this victory became a symbol of Canada’s independence and nationhood. One of the key reasons for Canada’s growth during WW1 was the treaty of Versailles as it marked an important stage in the gradual movement toward Canadian independence from Britain. During the 1920s, Prime Minister Mackenzie king made it clear to Britain that Canada would not automatically sent troops in support, he stated that only the Canadian parliament would decide whether to send troops or not to support Britain. This was the first time that Canada refused unconditional
World War 1 is often known as the Great War by many people. Canada played a very big and important role in this war, supplying Britain with many weapons, aids and nurses, foods and on top of that, thousands of brave soldiers. When the war first started, many Canadian men were greatly excited about the adventures that they will experience at war and the stories they will be able to tell when they come home as heroic soldiers. This excitement led many men, even young boys to enlist and volunteer for the war. However, when this war that was supposed to end in a couple of months, led to a year and then another, the number of volunteering men started to decrease further and further. This rapid drop of soldiers led Prime Minister Borden to
Canada’s involvement in World War I was vital to the Allied success as shown through the battles of Vimy, Passchendaele, and Ypres. Yet in the end, their involvement with the Victory Treaty was non-existent and received nothing but some nationalistic pride. Moreover, the ultimate lesson that we learned is that fighting for the British does not help our own nation improve and this is proven by the lack of representation during the final signing of the Treaty of Versaille. Moreover, this treaty reshaped the countries of Europe with major changes to borders, German military and colonies, and the formation of the League of Nations. I will be giving insight based on Canada's involvement within the Treaty of Versailles and the specific changes
