Most people aren’t aware that caffeine can act as a stimulant to the central nervous system. So once someone consumes a caffeinated beverage they may begin to notice a slight change in the way their body begins to feel. Caffeine can be found in many different places such as energy drinks, coffee, candy and also in other common beverages and over the counter medications. Samples of regular and decaf coffee were compared from Starbucks and were only found to have a difference of 60 milligrams. “There is no nutritional need for caffeine. It can be avoided in the diet (Berger 58).” Not only can caffeine have a bad effect on your diet it can also have major effects on your brain. Caffeine can increase the rate of neuron firing in the brain, and it blocks adenosine receptors in the brain which keeps people feeling alert. “It works differently on different people with different tolerances (Berger 63).” People who consume large amounts of caffeine on a regular basis can suffer a change in the brains chemical makeup which make it even more difficult for someone to quit. After 24 hours of attempting to quit the substance the withdrawal symptoms begin. Someone may notice things become foggy, and lack alertness. Why, exactly, is caffeine so addictive? It is basically so addictive because of the way the caffeine reacts with the brain. Soon after caffeine is consumed it heads to the small intestine and absorbs it is then transferred to the bloodstream, and from there it can enter the brain. When someone ingest caffeine is said to be like “putting a block of wood under one of the brains primary brake pedals (Braun 65).” The block could remain there for about six hours depending on how old the person is, how much they weigh, and also how often the person consumes caffeine.
