Plot summary[edit] The story begins in March 1836, during the Battle of the Alamo, twenty-two years after the event depicted at the end of The Seekers, book three of the series. Amanda Kent, daughter of Gilbert Kent and Harriet Lebow, was among the women and children who survived the ensuing massacre. After the massacre, she was taken before Santa Anna, who led the Mexican forces against the Texans, and he was willing to grant her clemency, an offer she declined, putting her life in danger. She was saved by Major Luis Cordoba, one of Santa Anna’s officers, who did not fully support him. Cordoba put Amanda to work as his servant and they eventually fell in love. In chapter 6 of Rocket Boys, Homer tells his friends about forming his rocket club called BCMA or Big Creek Missile Agency and gets a couple friends to join him. Homer and his friend Quentin go to the County Library to do some research about rockets, but were not able to find anything that was useful enough to help them. They both start thinking of the future and see themselves having a trophy in honor of the rocket they would soon build. While the two are talking in school a teacher named Ms. Riley and the principle Mr. Turner overhear their conversations. In chapter 8, Grant recalls his own teacher Matthew Antoine. Mr. Antoine hated teaching and his own students. To Mr. Antoine education is only good for making new teachers which sustain the cycle of uselessness. As Mr. Antoine becomes older he sees no evidence that education can lead to an improvement in the real word. Mr. Antoine describes to Grant that you can teach a black child but they won’t do any good for themselves with what you taught them. He says that blacks are just meant to run away. Mr. Antoine hates himself for the color he bears. ‘When you see that those five and a half months you spend in that church each year are just a waste of your time, you will. You will. Craig Mullaney definitely made many challenges for himself and accepted challenges from others with no questions asked. Being the thriving Valedictorian of his high school class and earning other prestigious accolades he stood out from the other entire student. But at West Point, Mullaney would be intertwined with hundreds of other classmates with the same, if not more achievements, making it seemingly impossible to be any kind of a predominant student.
n the novel Cold Mountain written by Charles Frazier there is a lot that's going on in this book. But there is important things and topics I can discuss as I've been reading. I have come across many questions that need answers and I hope that I can get them answer in discussions or by the time I finish reading this novel.
In chapter 7, Shane didn't care what people said or thought about him. He only cared what people said to Joe. So when Fletcher and his boys pass by his land on their horses making jokes about having pigs and their smell , while Joe not having any, Shane goes back to town . He comes back and tells everyone that “ your pigs are dead and buried”. When Shane leaves to the back yard, one of the homesteaders comes rushing in and tells everyone what in the bar between Shane and Chris. Everyone realizes how dangerous Shane is when he grabbed Chris and starting slapping repeatedly in the face when he bought Chris a drink and threw it back to shane. The main character is Beatrice “Tris” Prior and is the lead character and narrates the whole series. She is 16 and born to the faction abnegation but eventually transferred to dauntless and has to face the fact that she is “divergent” which is a combination of many factions and puts her life at risk because the government is looking for people like her. She has 3 other people in her family: Andrew prior (dad), Natalie prior (mom) and Caleb prior (brother) her mom and dad die earlier in the series, all that is left of her family is her and caleb. She gets into a relationship with Tobias Eaton, as the book progresses on they go through some conflict but still cared and took care for each other throughout, her friends and relationships include:
Simon accidentally drops Joe of a cliff and he has no way to get up. Simon is stuck in a seat he made in the snow. If he moves they will both get pulled down the crevasse. He falls out of the seat and has to cut the rope.
This frame is the ending of part 1 of this book. It is interesting to see that this shows me the conflict rising and Marjane starting her brand new life in a different country. Right now they are in a middle of a war with Arab. Not long ago, the Arab bombed Marjane neighborhood. She breathes so delighted that her parents were okay however it remain a tragedy to discover that her friend, Neda Baba-levy, was gone.
He threatened to turn her in if she tried to escape, but it did not faze her. Her father had inspired her to become free, and nothing was going to stop her. As recalled by Karol Brown, “She was not afraid to believe that she deserved to have a better life. It was her right.” One day while she was cleaning, she told him through song that she was going to escape, and he was not coming with her. In the middle of the night in the year 1849, she escape through the field. A few weeks before, a white lady had told her if she ever needed help, she would help her. This was her first destination in her escape route. In the morning, the lady gave her other places she could use to escape to freedom. Through her journey, she was brave and strong. She never turned back, fearing the consequences. Other slave sympathizers helped her along the long, hard journey to Pennsylvania. Her other symbol that she used while she looking for something was singing songs that referred to “the Promised Land.” She was very brave while she was trying to escape slavery (Alexander). A few days later, she crossed the border of Pennsylvania into freedom. She was finally free. Free from all of the hard work, the beatings, the disrespect. But there was one problem; there was no one to help her, no one to welcome her or keep her safe. Her family was still in the South. She was all alone. But she could not leave them there.
One day Michael’s family was in their house preparing for what was to come. Michael’s mom was gardening. Michael’s dad was cutting firewood. Lastly, Michael’s sisters were helping Michael and his dad were helping Michael get water. Michael and his dad were loading up the carriage to go hunting for food in the winter. It was starting to get dark. At last it was time to say good-bye. Sarah and Lilia, Michael’s sisters, both ran towards him dad and Michael to hug them good-bye. Mama waits until they are done, and then she goes to papa, kisses him on the cheek, and says, “ Please be careful. I don’t want to see you getting hurt. I love you.” Then she hugs and kisses Michael, and tells him the same thing, and they head out.
