The first book which helped me start my research is called The Serial Killer Files by H. Schechter. The book is split into 6 chapters documenting the how, where, when, what and why of serial killers but the main section that interested me was why. Although this book was not incredibly relevant to my research as it was written mainly for entertainment purposes I have decided to include it because it was the first source to catch my attention and push me to pursue this question. While H.Schechter believes that no children are born evil, a concept born in the 50’s from a popular play and book "The Bad Seed", but according to a study by Professor Steven Pinkerton, there is a possibility that they inherit genes from their parents or experience genetic anomalies that make them more susceptible to becoming a serial killer. Though he believes that genetics alone are not enough to make a murder, they must be coupled with traumatic life experiences.

Schlesinger’s 'Pathological Narcissism and Serial Homicide: Review and Case Study' focuses mainly on the link between psychological factors and serial killing. Specifically pathological narcissism caused generally caused by some kind of abuse, most commonly from a parental figure, that results in feelings of inadequacy and the need to overcompensate. Although this essay dates back to 1998, Schlesinger’s essay is still relevant today as she uses a case study of a real serial killer who remains anonymous to show how his narcissism reflects in his signature and the posing of the victims as well as his confession. In addition she cites multiple criminal investigators to further show how most cases of serial murders show traits of self-absorption and have a low
