The idea of inculcating a servant leadership approach within a society riddled with thoughts and desires to be independent and on top, is counterintuitive to not only the culture, but the nature of man. As Scazzero (2014) noted, “we live in a culture shaped by the beast” (p. 43). We would all agree that modeling the behavior that Jesus exhibited in the upper room isn’t what we all aspire to do—at least on a very basic, natural level. However, this is the idea and hallmark that author James Hunter is attempting to instill in others in his book The Servant. Since childhood, John Daily has had these seemingly divine signposts pointing to someone named Simeon who finally materialized in the person of Leonard Hoffman, a former legendary business executive and accomplished author, who lost his wife to a brain aneurysm and then later became a monk who now resides within the walls of the monastery. During this retreat, John becomes part of a group of five other leaders—with Simeon as their teacher—who engage with one another in a classroom setting and discover the true essence of leadership, which is agape love. Ideas such as differentiating between authority and power, needs and wants, and the reality that love isn’t a feeling you have, but rather how you handle and treat others were all conveyed in a way that is accessible to the reader (Hunter, 1998, p. 109). Additionally, the restructuration of our old paradigms with regard to top down management and the various flowerings and outgrowth of agape love, such as honesty, forgiveness, selflessness and commitment, which Hunter (1998) noted as being, “probably the most important behavior of all” were presented (p. 120).

Additionally, the idea of leadership, as expressed in the book, involves functioning from a position of authority, instead of power. Power is something that another person can give you, or that you can inherit, whereas authority is achieved by the person you become (Hunter, 1998. pp.30-31). This type of leadership
