Sierra Leone is an African country where historically, multiple cultures have survived. Since the feudal and monarchal systems arrived in the region dating back to the 15th century, the Temne and Mendes cultures flourished (Coleman, 2014). The Mendes culture was entangled with many beliefs and discoveries. The culture was complex and known for medicines, ancestral worship, a belief in God, masked spirit manifestations and secret societies (Coleman, 2014). The Temne culture is known for the agriculture of rice and a system of laws (Coleman, 2014). In the 1787, the British established itself in West Africa. Sierra Leone was able to endure the British influence better than its region counterparts, because from 1825 to 1896 adopted the Temne political system with the purpose of indirect rule (Coleman, 2014). The climate of Sierra Leone consists of two seasons, the summer rainy season which lasts from May to December and the winter dry season which lasts from December to April (2014, p.661). Sierra Leone is considered one of the wettest places in west Africa with receiving 495 cm of rainfall a year (2014, p.661). The coastal belt of the mangrove swamps, wooded hill country, upland plateau and eastern mountains are all present in Sierra Leone (2014, p.661). The Atlantic Ocean is the lowest elevation of the country at 0 meters and Loma Mansa (Bintimani) is the highest elevation at 1,948 meters (2014, p.661). Sierra Leone has an abundant amount of natural resources. Diamonds are the most common natural resource, but Sierra Leone also contains titanium ore, bauxite, iron ore, gold and chromite (2014, p.661).
