Throughout decades, education inequality is still one of the most deliberate and controversial issues in the United States. Thus far, the privilege or right to receive education has not attained the level of equality throughout the nation. Poor districts obtain less educational funds while rich districts obtain more, which create an immense gap between the quality of schools in poor and rich areas. In other words, the education gap is the root of inequality in America. Inequality in education is linked to the major problems in the society. The need for studies to be done to find ways of overcoming these inequalities is very inevitable. The means of mitigating these inequalities are important for the entire world. This is something of great interest due to the fact that children need quality education which is a pillar for a guaranteed future. Generally speaking, the distinctions among races, genders, and classes in the society have caused the educational inequality in America.
Human rights are rights that we deserve including the right to equal wages; gender and ethnic inequality has been an on-going issue in the United States for a very long time. This inequality has been the reason for the Wage Gap which is a violation of everyone’s human rights. Some people believe that the wage gap is just a gender problem but it is not, it is unequal opportunities for racial and gender minorities; in fact some women that are of a certain race are paid significantly less than someone who is only of one minority. First off, women in America can’t make as much money as the average white male, as stated before. This is an issue for women across the states, and while most people could simply assume that women just tend to pick lower paying jobs, which is only slightly true, women still tend to make less money in ALL jobs and fields compared to men. However, 21% is simply the average wage gap throughout the nation. In certain states, such as Louisiana, the gap is even higher at 35%. Equally important, this gap can increase even more based on their race as well. Compared to white men, black women make 63% of their annual wage. For Pacific Islanders, 62%. For Hispanic women, it’s as low as 54%. On a bigger scale, this means that for every $100 that the average white male makes, the average Spanish woman can only make $54.
The Wage Gap is unfair and it needs to be fixed, women should have the same equal rights as men. Women can have the same job as men, work the same amount of hours and still not receive the same amount of pay which is simply wrong. The Wage Gap is not fair for women, how much pay that you receive should not be determined by your gender. Women make 79 cents for every dollar earned by men, the wage gap for that is 21 percent. The Wage Gap is the difference in pay between two people.
The root of the African American education gap originates from anti-intellectualism. It would be disheartening to think that what is holding African Americans back is part of African American culture itself. However, only if African Americans, and all Americans, are honest about their flaws, will we be able to fix the flaws and make progress forward. Amongst many social justice issues, educational inequity continues to dramatically affect the nation's youth in the long term. However, for some students the ability to access a quality primary education provided by public schools depends on the students socioeconomic bearing. The insufficient availability of essential resources, opportunities, and funding creates a hurdle to access a higher quality education. This reiterates that a higher education creates a step forward in the education system to close the achievement gap.
The following are three specific educational experiences from my past. I will describe the event, analyze it critically, and make relevant, explicit connections to the concepts, theories, and issues discussed in Education 162: Education and Opportunity in the United States. I will also comment on the significance of the event in my own education.
The education gap was bred by two factors: the delegation of educational responsibility to states and the diversity of race and socioeconomic class in America. The Tenth Amendment to the United States Constitution reserves all powers not explicitly delegated to the federal government to the states. Thus, education is placed under the rule of the individual states. As a result, educational standards vary across the country. The diversity of race and socioeconomic class, in addition to the varying standards, influences school systems. Women joined the workforce in early 1800s. The wage gap fluctuates depending on age and status. In early twenty-first century women’s median pay began to rise compared to men’s median pay (“Women in the Workplace”). The wage gap has remained despite the significant advances made by most generations of women in the labor market (“Understanding the Gender Gap”). In 1933 National Recovery administration designed codes that improved women wages, shortened hours, and increased the number of women employment (“Women in the Workplace”). Despite all the hardships women faced being in the workforce they didn’t give up. It is an issue in many places around the world, for many different reasons. It is indicative of a lingering aura of discrimination. As well, it is the remnants of past times, where this was expected. However, in this day and age, it is far from expected that there would be such a deviation in salary due to gender. Unfortunately, there is. The wage gap between men and women is a grievous issue with many facets concerning manifestation and its effects around the world, which require us to exercise more care and succor when pursuing action.
Already, up to eighty-three percent of companies report a moderate to serious shortage of skilled workers, and sixty-nine percent of them expect the shortage to grow worse in 3-5 years. This crisis will be able to cause an economic stand still in our country, and if this gap is not filled, our way of living will be changed severely. Jobs need to be filled soon enough, and luckily enough for this country, we had such important factors, like career and technical education high school, colleges, and training programs that can jump start the workers of tomorrow, and teach them a skill to be able to become a proficient tradesmen.
