There is no denying that the period of time where slavery was legal in America was a dark time that all wish was expunged from the nation’s history. Ever since the end of WWII came around and Japanese and victims of the Holocaust started to receive reparations for the ordeals then endeavored. This launched a proposal that the descendants of the enslaved people in the United States would be given some type of compensation. The form of compensation varies from individual monetary payments to land-based payment. Although the American enslavement of African Americans was unjust, the American has undergone new government and the new one should not be held responsible for the actions of the previous. Although reparations to some might seem like …show more content…
Thus further explains that the bloodlines of the descendants are corrupted and too hard to trace for pursuing compensation.
Even though in today’s day and age slavery is considered a crime against humanity, it was not always so. Since at the time acts of slavery were being committed it was not a crime, the current US government should have no legal obligation to compensate these descendants. Many legal standpoints arise at the argument of restitution, another being that the U.S government that is currently in use did not exist before the ratification of the Thirteenth amendment. The current U.S. government "inherited the institution of slavery, and cannot be held legally liable for the enslavement of Africans by Europeans prior to that time" (Reparations of Slavery n.d.). David Horowitz argues that there is no definitive group responsible for slavery, Africans themselves were responsible for a lot of the slave trade, and there were about 3,000 black slave owners in the U.S. David simply puts it into terms that the American government should not have to pay and if they did have to otherworldly countries would have to as well. This statement from the article points out that the Europeans enslaved the Africans and brought them to America. The U.S government itself did no such thing, although they prolonged it they eventually ceased slavery and made right
Professor David Oshinsky paints an excellent picture by elaborating on how the United States dealt with freed slaves post-civil war. Putting into context the treatment of the now “African Americans” back in the year of 1866 and the following years after helps to give a clear idea of what could possibly be “worse than slavery”.
The article, “The Case for Reparations”, presents itself with a commendable representation on how the need for reparations is essential when combined with the brutal history of slavery and progression of blacks in American Society after slavery. Ta- Nehisi Coates argues that the relationship between racial identity and reparations is based upon America’s debt to blacks for the countless years of injustice. With this he demonstrates how white supremacy has ultimately used impractical measures to maintain what they consider social stability for those who were not African American.
In the article, “The case for Reparations” by Ta-Nehisi Coates, the author examined African American history as it relates to slavery and oppression. The article discussed slavery experiences, unjust laws, current issues, and reparation ideas. Coates (2014) examined past events that occurred to prevent African Americans from being equal to whites. According to Coates (2014) African Americans were vulnerable because they did not have protection from law. The article discussed how African Americans suffered many loses due to whites such as voting rights, taxes, and property lost. African Americans were still at a disadvantage when certain laws were put into place in their favor. Coates (2014) gives great insight of the unfairness and hardships. The article also gives great examples of current issues that African Americans encounter in today’s society, such as health care and employment. Coates (2014) main purpose is to encourage readers that African Americans deserve compensation for years of oppression. The author also believes that reparation is necessary and would be very beneficial.
For years African Americans descent were slave by the United States. During these rough times, Africans faced painful hardships and lost their true identity. Later on in 1863, president Abraham Lincoln announced The Emancipation Proclamation where the slaves were finally "free". Although this freedom, many Africans were still considered slaves to many white Americans. Whites made African Americans believe that if they stayed, they would be paid and live a much better life rather than leaving with empty hands and starting off from nothing. Though this, Africans were still betrayed by the whites even though they were already considered free. Taken this into consideration, there’s one question that has remains for years, and that is whether or not black Americans should be paid for the reparations of their hardships. This had been a commonly topic for years with two sides to the story. Many agree with the idea that the United States should pay for reparations because Africans were promised goods for their hard work. And on the other hand, many believe that the United States shouldn’t pay for reparation because slavery ended years ago and it is unfair to take money from American taxpayers where many came to the United States after slavery ended. The author of The Case for Reparation, Ta-Nehisi Coates goes into deep details on how the U.S should be marked responsible for paying for reparations. And writer Kevin D. Williamson goes against Coates own essay in how the U.S shouldn’t
Reparations are defined as the making of amends for a wrong one has done, by paying money to or otherwise helping those who have been wronged. Black communities all across America are owed reparations. Not only for the ancestors of the enslaved, but for most black individuals everywhere, because they're all feeling the repercussions of slavery, years of separate but equal acts, Jim Crow laws, police brutality, and the rise of white supremacists and hate groups. The successful black individuals have had to work ten times harder to get to their position in life than anyone else would have had to. They’ve had to overcome greater obstacles, endure harsher punishments, and deal with racist stereotypes for hundreds of years. The black community has been playing catch up for their whole existence in America.
In the present paper a clear link will be made between segregation and slavery and an increased poverty rate in African Americans now, as well as an analysis of previous historical instances of reparations and how other instances of reparations from slavery set a precedent for reparations for African Americans. There will also be mention of past historical precedent and how, when reparations were given prior, they were received. International law must be addressed as well, and it plays a key part in the argument for reparations. Once that information is established, I will go on to the gap in my knowledge. The gap that is present in my research is futuristic, therefore, there is no way to be completely sure of what way reparations will affect African Americans lives. The way I am hoping to reach this gap is through an analysis of different historical accounts of reparations. Along with looking to historical precedent, I will also look to see if financial aid will still be available to the African Americans who do receive reparations. The topic of reparations is a highly controversial one because there are extremely strong arguments on each side, some of which I will mention in this paper. Reparations have not yet been given to African Americans so there is a large gap in knowledge as to whether or not they will work. Since reparations are all theoretical this paper will be based heavily on
black people in the U.S. has lessened, there are still huge ramifications that plague black
Slavery had been a huge part of America's history and has contributed greatly towards the structure of today's American demographic. One of the issues that come with the topic of slavery is reparations. The question asked is should we provide reparations or deny reparations. As much as I believe that every harm done to someone should have some compensation in return, in this case, it is just too late. Rather than fixing what had happened, it would create more struggles for the people.
In this paper, a clear reasoning will be made pertaining to how reparations have helped different groups of people who have been awarded atonement. Throughout the course of this paper, it will become apparent how monetary reparations will affect the quality of lives of African Americans through analyzing the prior instances of reparations to different groups of people along with other instances in which reparations were awarded to African Americans. These previous instances set a precedent for any monetary reparations that can be given to African Americans for slavery and segregation. Reparations are meant to rectify violations of human
The United States government should pay reparations to African Americans as a means of admitting their wrong-doing and making amends. The damages African Americans have sustained from White America’s policy of slavery have been agonizing and inhumane. Therefore, I am in favor of reparations for African Americans. The effect of slavery has been an enduring issue within the African American community. Many of us are cognizant of the harm racism brought to the African American race, conveyed through slavery, racial segregation and discrimination. African Americans suffered many atrocities, but the greatest damage done to them was the destruction of they’re original identity. African
Should America Pay? Slavery And The Raging Debate On Reparations, is a book written by Raymond A. Winbush. The purpose of him writing this book was to give the world an opportunity to look honestly at our economic and political history as a global community, and to change the system as a whole. In 2001 Raymond participated in the Jubilee movement and preparations for the world conference against racism that took place in Durban,South Africa. It opened his eyes to the conflict of the past, present, and future. He felt like the government avoids these issues as a whole. Society also inspired him to write this book. Society says that color people are suppose to forgive and forget about slavery, and the hardships for blacks after slavery. They say it didn’t happen to us, it
The mere notion that slavery’s legacy is questioned reveals that not there has not been enough effort to reconcile and make amends with a tragedy was prevalent at this nation’s founding. We glorify our patriotic founding fathers for their loyalty and leadership, yet they were men that owned slaves and tolerated the abuse of other humans. The Three-Fifths Compromise of 1787 was passed by our very own Congress and declared black men and women as property worth only three-fifths of a being. Racism existed at the beginning of this nation, and it continues today in the same cycle from which it began. Freeing blacks from the shackles of white supremacy was certainly a step towards justice, but for honest change to occur the people of the era need to also free their close-minded and racist mentalities. Though slavery was made illegal, there were no social efforts that could have potentially changed the minds of the whites responsible for allowing slavery to take place. Slaves became free only to find themselves in the midst of segregation and the same outright racism that permitted slavery in the first
African slavery is something that will always be a blemish on America’s history. The people who settled these lands were very cruel people in many ways, and slavery truly displays that. It is important not to forget these horrible events so that it can be prevented in the future. Slaves are the people who truly built much of America, and even though it’s something most people don’t want to think about, America owes more than it might think to these people. The slave trade is what found success, and that’s part of why the country is what it is
The post-slavery and post-colonial era of global history has been marked by continued oppression and racism against blacks politically, economically, and socially. Despite the emancipation and independence obtained by former slaves and colonies, blacks around the world are still faced with systematic oppression through segregation, limited education, and impoverishment. Reparations have been proposed as a possible repayment for the generations of torment faced by blacks worldwide. Although many activists have different definitions, forms, and justifications for reparations, they collectively believe that reparations are necessary to successfully move forward as a global society.
Thousands of men charge into battle, most never leave alive. Their families will never see their smiles or hear their laughter again. These brave me fought for the cause of aborting slavery. Now, citizens of America want even more to pay back the slaves? The citizens want reparations for African Americans. Slavery was a horrifying experience. By giving reparations, or making amends of what America has done wrong, will help ease the pain of slavery. They are not needed considering the efforts made to take responsibility of slavery. Because it is not clear who is eligible and responsible for reparations, the African American population already experience a better lifestyle than most, and because slavery and discrimination was a global phenomenon American taxpayers should not have to pay for reparations from their hard-earned money.
