In the social media and communications industry, many companies began on a small scale and progressed to improve their product by merging with a new company to create a stronger product and expand their market internationally while some businesses remained in North America and did not merge with other companies but settled for the status quo. In this paper, I will discuss two companies that chose different paths and the pros and cons of the business decisions each company made. Mark Zuckerberg had a vision to create change. He has always said that was his goal. What he created is one of the most groundbreaking forms of social networking in history. Facebook began in 2004 and eventually made Mark Zuckerberg a billionaire. What began as an idea with his friends from Harvard University, is now one of the most famous companies in the world. He wanted to change the way people communicate, so he and his friends designed an original internet platform called “Facemash” in 2003 which was just available to Harvard students. This served their purpose for a while and for two years’ students were able to communicate and share ideas within their school community. Soon it expanded to include other colleges in the Northeast and California. Zuckerberg had strong leadership skills and being a Harvard educated student prepared him to be successful in business.
