In the novella “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck, there are two guys named George and Lennie. They were friends for a very long time and stood by each other. Some people may argue that George was a bad friend to Lennie but I believe that he was a good friend. Friends aren’t perfect, they will mess up. Just because George messed up and made questionable actions towards Lennie, that doesn’t make him a bad friend. You will not find a friend that has never done wrong by you.
Good friendships make life easier. Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, is about two men, George and Lennie, who go on various journeys in order to get a job. Although George would consider Lennie to be his closest friend, he ultimately ends up shooting and killing Lennie. George did this, not out of hatred, but rather out of protection. A good friend will always want what is best for one another. Steinbeck uses his protagonists’ friendship in order to show that true friendship can help make any of life’s hardships less difficult.
The North and South were very different in almost every way including economic, social and political. The North’s economic was booming and was based on industrial manufacturing. There were more railroad tracks and this would help the North with its trading. The South’s economy was mostly based on cotton and the slaves. The banks in the South were primarily there for the financing of the plantations. These differences would lead to conflict and then to the start of the Civil War.
Abraham Lincoln once said to George Robertson “‘Can we, as a nation, continue, together permanently—forever—half slave, and half free?’ The problem is too mighty for me. May God, in his mercy, superintend the solution.” (Hobson, 1912) This he wrote in a private letter in 1855. It was another year before Lincoln felt ready to think about saying the same thing in a way that would be really heard. He made his position clear September 18, 1858, stating “I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races,” going on to say that he opposed blacks having the right to vote, to serve on juries, to hold office and to intermarry with whites. (Mintz, S., & McNeil, 2016) The Civil War in the United States was inevitable. The great sectional differences between North and South were far too great, and the main reason for these differences was the fact that slavery underlay both the southern economy and society. No one, not even Abraham Lincoln could dispute the growing gap between the nation at that time.
For all of the ups and downs of Henry Lee’s life he makes his life good with his love and friendship. Jamie Ford wants to get the reader's attention on friendship by writing Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. Henry’s life was a wild, crazy, and hectic he was shunned out by his family just because he was being a good friend. Friendship is something that people can not live without. Just like Henry did a lot of things just so his friend can be happy, he showed that his friendship meant a lot to him knowing there was consequences.
The thesis of the book is that segregation of black and whites was developed later in life than it did when slavery was just introduce. In the earlier years blacks and white would live within the same residence and or property, sharing the same premises if not equal facilities. The black and white would attend the same church and sit in the pews. As life progress and economics and Political conflicts took place that’s when the segregation began.
As Thomas Aquinas states, “There is nothing on this earth more prized than true friendship.” Friends cheer each other up when they are sad and support them when they are happy. In John Steinbeck’s novella Of Mice and Men, two migrant workers, George and Lennie, arrive as newcomers on the ranch. Throughout the story, different problems are thrown their way, and their friendship is tested with each one. George shows how true friendship requires sacrifice because friends sacrifice personal freedom, they protect each other, and they sacrifice emotional energy.
One of the most controversial and bloodiest wars to have ever taken place was fought by a nation separated in two to decide the fate of slavery in America. The Union Army of the North would go on to win the war, but they didn’t do it alone. It took a great three-part strategy that relied heavily on southern citizens being loyal to the Union cause, Divisions that emerged before the war that helped shape the Union, and Anti-confederate groups who helped cripple the South, all playing a role in the Union’s victory in the Civil War.
The Civil war was a turning point in the United States history, it significantly changed southern society. Because most of battles were happened in the Union soil, southern economy be destroyed severely. Most of industries be destroyed, agricultural become the major depends of southern people. Thereby, poor be widespread accompany with racism. In order to maintains white superior in south. Henry W. Grady, an editor of the Atlanta Constitution also be think as the “Spokesman of the New South”, created the “New South” concept
Despite being connected by canals, railways, roads, and their exchange of products, the North and the South were very different in many of their beliefs and their practices. Many political and governmental issues could be traced back the issues and differences between these two major regions. The North and the South differed on almost every aspect of life. Their economies, structures, and products differed. The north was industrialized whereas the South was still mostly agricultural. This major difference lead to several of their other differences, including views on slavery, social structures, and daily lives.
During 1790 and 1850, the United States was rapidly changing. The country was learning to live on its own, apart from England with its own economy, laws, and government. Not long after it declared independence that a rift between North and South began to start. The North believed in the Puritan Merchant role model, and the South in the role model of the English Country Squire. The difference in point of views soon caused the United States to start to split apart before eventually completely separating and resulting in one the bloodiest wars in American history. Prior to the outbreak of the civil war in 1861-1865, many events occurred within the years leading up to it that that foreshadowed the eventual succession of the southern “cotton states”. The Union and the Confederacy had begun to grow apart politically and economically following the election of President Lincoln. The outcome of the 1860 election sparked controversy and disagreement between the two sides, most specifically about the topic of slavery. Blacks had become bound to a life of slavery, and had become a staple of the American work force and economy.
When reading The South vs. The South I come across the problem that the white Southerners had with the Republican wanting to free slaves. The problem persisted as the war continued. The view of white Southerners and Republicans which were led by the president Lincoln were different.
Have you ever been treated poorly? Or saw someone being treated poorly? Well it shouldn’t be that way. For example, in The Watsons Go to Birmingham 1963 people like Rufus, Byron ,and the people of the south are treated poorly due to social class, mistakes, and their race.
“You can change the laws, but you cannot change the hearts of the people.” The year of 1865 was definitely not a year of prosperity and idealism. During the last months of the war and the first months of the post-war era in the South, many families suffered and faced challenges that made it difficult for them to progress in society. Among those families were Cornelia McDonald, Louis Hughes, John Robertson, Samuel Agnew and their families. These four Southerners faced an unpredictable future. In the narrative written by Stephen V. Ash titled “A Year in the South 1865” depicts the daily life of these four “ordinary” people in the South and how their different backgrounds affected their abilities to adjust themselves at the end of the war.
As declared by both Senator James Hammond and Hinton Helper both the North and the South knew about their economic divergence. While the North manufactured almost every item of utility and adornment, the South’s economy was mostly based on agricultural products such as rice and cotton. This vast discrepancy between both sides forced them to develop in a conflicting manner that sooner or later would lead to conflict. For the South, its fertile soil and flawless weather for agriculture had the optimal circumstances for large-scale farms and crops like tobacco and cotton. On the other hand, the North with its abundant natural resources and climate made its economy flourish without the need of hefty plantations that required a lot of workforces.
