Rodeos are full of energy. They can be very dangerous in the process of having fun. Protective gear is recommended for some of the events. There are many different competitions that can suit all ages. There is also a lot of history behind each of the events. The first rodeo was in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1847. The Spanish- conquistadors and Spanish- Mexicans played a key role in the origin of rodeo with the introductions of breeding horses and cattle in the southwest. This all started when the civil war was done. Cattle drives, large ranches, and ranch hands, also known as cowboys. Farms started to get larger because, men and women started to head home. Having a large ranch or farm can help bring in lots of profit. Shortly after, the turned

For the cowboy and cowgirl at heart, it's almost time for the California Rodeo Salinas. It's the 106th year of this exciting rodeo, which has been a tradition in Salinas for years. The Quarter horse breed is also very well known for their competing in rodeos. There are many different events in the rodeo itself that they are involved in. These events include: bareback and saddle bronc riding, team roping, tie down roping, steer wrestling, barrel racing, and bull riding (outriders). In the bareback and saddle bronc riding these horses are used for bucking purposes. For bareback bronc riding they put a strap around the horses flank and then a rider gets on them and tries to ride the horse for eight seconds. In saddle bronc riding there is also a strap that goes around the horses flank, but the difference is that there is a saddle that is put on them for the rider to sit in. in the team roping event there are two riders each with a horse and they try to rope a steer using the horses. On rider with their horse attempts to rope the steers head while the other
The sport of Rodeo has been a tradition in the United States since the cowboys of the American West began pushing herds of cattle across this country. Often, there was very little to do besides hard work with the cattle and horses, so the cowhands would often get together and compete with each other in the skills that they practiced every day on their jobs in order to relieve boredom. The first competitions in rodeo consisted mainly of riding bucking horses and roping steers, cows and calves, because this was what their work consisted of. Each ranch would send their best cowboys they had. The cowboys were competing only for the honor of their ranches they worked for, and their bosses who owned those
Rodeo is a sport that developed from the cattle industry in the American West. Its history reaches back to the sixteenth century. After the Civil War, with the quantity of feral cows in the Southwest and the market in the East, the era of the cattle drives, large ranches, and range cowboys began. Skills of the range cowboy led to competitive contests that eventually resulted in standard events for rodeo. With its history deep in Southwest history, rodeo continued to evolve until it has become a professional sport for men and women that is being perpetuated by youth rodeo organizations. The Spanish conquistadors and the Mexican vaqueros contributed major components to rodeo.
Rodeo is popular throughout the United States and is the official state sport for South Dakota, Wyoming, Texas, and Idaho. People think we are just entertaining the people and think the animals are physically provoked to make the cowboys look more impressive (Nielsen 1). Really that isn’t true its really how good of a hand you are and how well and experienced you are riding an animal. Some people make their horses hard in the mouth pulling back to much and that isn’t a good hand on a horse. A good hand on a horse has their horses mouth super light so with a little touch of the foot and rein your horse will turn a complete circle without pulling hard.
Exploration of the New World began when Leif Erikson, a viking of Iceland, came to America in 1000 AD. Europeans began venturing to the Americas in 1492 when Christopher Columbus arrived in the Caribbean by boat assuming he had reached the Indies. This excursion set off a chain of events involving many other Spanish Conquistadors journeying to a foreign land called America in search of the three G’s. Gold and glory clouded these Spaniard’s sense of humanity as they began to forget the third G, god. Conquistadors began to take an economic view of the Natives they crossed paths with instead of a religious view. Native’s lives were vastly subject to change because of the way the Spaniards treated them.
The United States wanted to expand its territory toward the West and the Southwest during the Market Revolution in search for raw materials. After gaining its independence from Spain in 1821, Mexico was left “destitute, reducing its ability to supply the establecimientos as before.” Aside from that, Native groups such as the Apache and the Comanche returned to raid its supply. They continued to raid Mexico, especially Texas. Eventually, the Native groups reached the outskirts of Mexico City. To create a buffer zone between Mexico and the Natives, the Mexican government opened its border in Texas and welcomed new settlers. Most of these settlers were Anglo-American. By the end of the 1820s, “Anglo-American outnumbered Mexicans in Texas 12,000 to 5,000.” The Anglo-American brought with them cash crops that helped flourished the economy of Texas.
Rodeo has been around for several decades and has gradually become very popular around the world. The three events that have been apart of the rodeo since the beginning include saddle bronc, steer roping, and bull riding. Rodeo is a great sport for cowboys and cowgirls to compete in an event that suits their lifestyle. These contests have changed dramatically since the first official rodeo in the late 1800’s. Because the rodeo event was created in 1888, ranchers culture has been brought to the world and created into a world wide sport.
Every artist's dream is to create something that leaves a lasting impression. The Last Conquistador follows the story of a sculptor who does exactly that. John Houser spent nearly a decade painstakingly crafted a 34-foot tall equestrian statue featuring the infamous Spanish conquistador Juan de Oñate y Salazar. Following in the footsteps of his father who assisted in the carving of Mount Rushmore, Houser's fantasy of leaving his mark in one of the largest bronze equestrian statues in the world finally became a reality (Valadez). However, what an artist attempts to express and what message is truly received may not be one and the same. While the Hispanic elite of El Paso praised (and funded) the magnificent piece, the Acoma were horrified by the towering symbol of oppression and genocide looming overhead. This film not only provides a window into the conflict and controversy surrounding Houser's work, but also showcases several aspects of Texas political culture and highlights the dismissive attitude toward Native American culture that is still prevalent today.
The Conquest of Mexico and the conversion of the peoples of New Spain can and should be included among the histories of the world, not only because it was well done but because it was very great. . . . Long live, then, the name and memory of him [Cortés] who conquered so vast a land, converted such a multitude of men, cast down so many men, cast down so many men, cast down so many idols, and put an end to so much sacrifice and the eating of human flesh! —Francisco López de Gómara (1552)
