In any sport, many things are needed to achieve. The sport that asks a person to literally go beyond what they can do is powerlifting. To do this, a person has to know the sport called powerlifting. He or she must learn to adapt a new way of physical and mental training, breathing, and way of life. Since the first professional competition in 1964, powerlifting has shown great feats of strength, power, legends and dreams that have changed, "How strong are you," actually implies (Hatfield 5).

Powerlifting Legends
Every great thing has its legends. Here are some from this great sport. The first great legend is a man known as Fred "Dr. Squat" Hatfield. Hatfield made history throughout the sport of powerlifting, being known best as the first man to squat over 1,000 pounds in a competition. He achieved 1,014 at a bodyweight of 255 pounds (American Strength Legends 2). He did this at the age of 45, as well. Even more so, he could bench press 573 pounds and deadlift 766 pounds. All through his life, Fred was an athlete, excelling in soccer, track, and gymnastics. He received many degrees associated with fitness and sports training, now owning one of the largest personal training organizations in the world; the International Sports Sciences Association. He has also trained the U.S.A. powerlifting squad and many other world renowned athletes. Some other huge achievements of Dr. Hatfield were winning three world powerlifting championships and setting thirty world and national records in five different weight classes, something never done by any other lifter. Fred competed from the 70's to this very day at the age of almost sixty (American Strength Legends 2).
Bill Kazmaier, another idol of the sport, was a huge beast at six feet, three inches tall and weighing between 320-350 pounds of muscle, he was untouchable in his career. He was a powerlifter and a
Jim Thorpe was an American Athlete who performed during the early 1900’s. At a young age he picked up track and field and eventually other sports like baseball and football and excelled in all of them. He gained worldwide attention because of his amazing talent in every sport he picked up and also because of his race being Native American, which was rare to see in professional sports. His two best sports were Football and Track and field which he won many awards in. He then got into the acting business which made him even more popular and respected throughout the US and even the world. From being told he is the best athlete in the world by a king, to being the president of what is now the NFL, Jim Thorpe changed America culturally because of his athletic career, his ability to persuade people not to discriminate
Lifting weights strengthens bones and tendons. It helps increase muscle volume and muscle conditioning. It allows an athlete to perform with a higher level of strength and speed. “Physically, athletes whom weight train and are in good condition will also be able to recover faster if and when an injury occurs. I see this in our setting and it is a proven fact” (Asing Interview).
One player could make a huge different in a game. They can even win the whole game for the team. That's exactly what Wilt Chamberlain did when he scored 100 points in a basketball game in 1962. Jim Brown was a football player for the Cleveland Browns. He was one of the most dominant running backs in 1963. He was so good they dedicated movies, books, articles, and more just to him for his impact he made in the sport. Sandy Koufax is the best pitcher in baseball of all time. He had a record of 137 wins and 70 losses. With nicknames like Koo-Foo, Sandy, or The Man With The Golden Arm he was not a person to mess with. He threw really fast and really accurate many batters were afraid of him. He won the 1966 world series(10 Famous Athletes of the 1960’s). Any in any sport can be the best player in that sport. These people put a lot of work into what they do to be the best. With a lot of hard work and dedication you can be the best at anything you
The famous athlete Bo Jackson is most well known for his share of talents in the MLB and NFL. Many recognize him due to his more than unique athletic abilities. During his early childhood and throughout his life, Bo had jaw dropping strength that no one could compare to. He could do backflips in thigh high water, and could dunk a stick through a basketball hoop like Michael Jordan.
Being an athlete I know the struggles of strength and conditioning. Many athletes are pushed in the weight room and during conditioning, however are they being taught the right way? Effective weight training depends on proper technique. Many coaches try to go off of what they know and force their athletes to lift weights. This improper way of lifting often causes injury. The athlete should also lift the proper amount of weights. Athletes today need to know the right way to lift weights. This will allow them to actually gain muscle, power and speed instead of just being sore. There are many factors in weight lifting which include diet, frequency, intensity, and specification. All of these factors play a vital role in developing muscle.
Jim Thorpe is a super hero of sports. He is a man who has a love for sports. He has played many sports, and is a true hero in the sports world. He was not only amazing at track and football, but he was also very good at swimming, lacrosse, basketball, wrestling, golf, and tennis. He was born May 28, 1887, and was born near a town called Prague in Oklahoma. His father was a farmer, and his name was Hiram Thorpe. His mother was a Potawatomi Indian named Mary James. Thorpes Native American name was WaThoHuk, which means “bright path.” He started off very young with great athletic abilities. This showed when he learned to ride horses and swim at the age of 3. Jim loved the outdoors as a boy, especially hunting. Jim had a twin brother, and they were very close. His brother was named Charlie. In 1904 Thorpe and his brother started school in Carlisle Industrial School in Pennsylvania. Whenever they were in school Charlie enjoyed it, but Jim did not. He wasn’t very good so Charlie had to help him through. At the age of 9 Charlie got sick and ended up dying. Thorpe was heartbroken he wanted to quit school. He even ended up running twentythree miles’ home to his parents. Whenever he first started his athletic career at his school he played football and track. In 1907 he proved his amazing abilities whenever he jumped over a high jump pole 5 feet 9 inches. At first Thorpe was never given the opportunity to try out for the team. Whenever he walked by the varsity players practicing
Jim Thorpe is debatably the best athlete of the 20th century. He was born on May 28th, 1887. Jim's mother had a pair of twin sisters before Jim was born. Unfortunately, they both passed away while they were babies. “He was born to Hiram Thorpe, a farmer, and Mary James, a Pottawatomie Indian and descendant of the last great Sauk and Fox chief Black Hawk, a noted warrior and athlete. Jim was actually born a twin, but his brother Charlie died at the age of nine. His Indian name, Wa-Tho-Huk, translated to “Bright Path,” something that Thorpe definitely had ahead of him.” (CMG Worldwide) Because Jim was born in Indian territory, he learned to hunt and trap animals which helped him develop his amazing endurance. When Jim was six, he was forced to
My favorite athlete is Trevor Brazil, for many of you who don’t know him, he is a professional athlete in the sport of rodeo. Trevor is an optimum cowboy competing in professional rodeo, leaving very few records in the sport unbroken. Often referred to as the “Michael Jordan of rodeo” , due to his great accomplishment.
The person I admire is Jack Roosevelt “Jackie” Robinson. He was the first African American to play major league baseball. The Brooklyn Dodgers picked him as their first baseman in 1947. He was the first pro-athlete in any sport to be honored. He achieved many first records in baseball history. He accomplished many things in his ten years of playing.
Well Rich, to begin, what makes someone great? What separates the ordinary from the spectacular? Most importantly, how do you determine the greatest to ever do it? There’s a reason why it holds such a special and important meaning when in conversation relating to sports. There is no more deeply discussed and talked about topic in the world of sports than the G.O.A.T discussion. The reason is because it is such a controversial and subjective topic. Very few have undisputedly reached greatest of all time status in the world of sports. Micheal Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Muhammed Ali, and Usain Bolt are the main names that jump out at you whenever debating this subject. These athletes have left a legacy that has been unrivalled or challenged by their
Throughout history there have been many influential people who have lived in this country. Some were politicians, some were actors, and some were even athletes. One such man was a gifted boxer named Muhammad Ali. He made his mark as an amateur, then as a professional. "The Greatest" was the self-proclaimed nickname of Ali, but so many people agreed that it stuck. He went through trials and tribulations in his life, which make him a historic icon. Muhammad Ali is known for being "The Greatest" boxer of all time, but unlike other athletes he is remembered for his out of the ring actions as well as his athletic accomplishments.
Ed Coan is arguably the greatest powerlifter of all time. He holds the world record deadlift in 4 weight classes and has a career high 901 pound deadlift. He has lifted more weight than almost every man alive and squatted 1,003 pounds at one point. Ed won his first title in 1983 and did not lose for 16 consecutive years. He has won with margins of 200-500 pounds, which is unheard of during that time period and even today. Mark Gallagher said “When he shattered the 2400-pound barrier, the second best 220-pound powerlifting total was 2102. Coan, mathematically, was 14.5% better than the next best powerlifter in the world” ( Joe Skopec Powerlifting). Ed Coan is almost a superhuman to the sport. He will always be the greatest ever.

For example, in basketball there is Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali in boxing, Babe Ruth in baseball, and etc. In volleyball, the greatest player of all time was Karch Kiraly. Not only has he won plenty of medals in indoor volleyball, he also has done a lot for himself in outdoor , or beach, volleyball. Kiraly accomplished a lot for himself in volleyball and once his season ended, he began coaching it as well. He started coaching the women’s olympic volleyball team and led them to victory.
