I’d like to start my Essay with famous quote of Virgina Woolf, which goes as, “Women have served all these centuries as looking glasses possessing the magic and delicious power of reflecting the figure of man at twice it’s natural Size”
The topic that I’ve chosen for my essay is The Status of A Woman in South Indian or specifically Malayalam Cinema. The first question the arises in my mind while watching any Malayalam movie is why does the nationally and internationally acclaimed Malayalam or for that matter any South Indian Cinema fail to represent women’s experiences, Why are The Female leads just subjected to basic chores, or as an object of desire? Me being a Woman find it very disturbing to see woman being labelled in the same umbrella.
Indian cinema has always been under the line of fire for its potrayal of women as objects of desire. Be it in the case of Mandakini, Parveen Babi or the current crop of actresses. From 'Sheila Ki Jawaani ' to 'Munni ki Badnaami ', its usually women who are utilized as objects of desire and sexual objects. The situation is no different in Indian culture where In reality the birth of a girl child is frowned and looked down upon with disrespect in some parts of India and shockingly even among elite and educated Indians, whereas the Birth of a boy is celebrated.
Indian Cinema as a whole is the biggest culprit here as the reach and impact by Commercial films is the most and it is very disheartening that such an industry still uses or turns
