Shortly after the revolutionary war, the small town of Pittsborough, then renamed Pittsburgh began to develop into a very important center, specializing in trading and industry. The convenience of natural resources and technological advancement has ranked Pittsburgh as one of the leading industrial cities in the United States in the past. The major cities of the United States are all very interesting, after I analyzed my decision; I decided to research the great city of Boston, Massachusetts. Boston was founded on September 17, 1630 and has a rich historical background making it a very important city in the United States. “The city of Boston was the home to several important events during the American Revolution such as: the Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party, the Siege of Boston, Battle of Lexington and Concord, and the Battle of Bunker Hill.” (Snow, Caleb H. (1828). History of Boston. Abel Bowen.) These were all significant events that helped shape the city Boston has become today.

In 1814, James and George established what we call today the “Strip District” that covered between 11th and 15th streets in Pittsburgh (“Strip District History,” n.d.). However, the official name was the “Northern Liberties of Pittsburgh” which was an area known as Bayardstown. A little over 20 years later, in 1837, the Northern Liberties linked with the city of Pittsburgh’s Fifth Ward, which was the first addition to the city’s earliest four wards (“Strip
Carnegie was very poor during his childhood, and this will cause him to try a variety of jobs that inevitably led to his steel empire. “Andrew Carnegie was born November 25, 1835 in Dunfermline, Scotland. His father, William Carnegie, a prosperous handloom weaver at the time of Andrew’s birth, was unable to compete with the new technology of steam loomers and fell into poverty as Andrew grew older,” (UXL biographies). In the 19th century, we were already big with steel. But, here came Henry Bessemer and changed the whole concept of it so we can put that steel to use. The Washington Monument was made with this steel. America started to expand and got bigger and better because of this invention. “As a home industry, iron and steel making ranks fifth in the Unites States being exceeded in order, by agriculture, slaughtering and packing foundry and machine shop products and lumber and timber products. The discovery of anthracite coal in Pennsylvania in the late 1700s led to the development of a robust coal industry in the eastern part of Pennsylvania that grew rapidly and contributed greatly to the history and the economy of Pennsylvania. The book The Face of Decline written by Thomas Dublin, Walter Licht, provides a well written historical and personal account of the discovery, growth, and finally the collapse of the anthracite coal industry in Pennsylvania in a chronological format. Half way through the book one starts to notice some changes in the authors format to cause and effect. The change occurs in order to discuss the cause and resulting effect of events in the region and the solutions. The story is one of great growth and opportunity in the early years which are highlighted by the documented economic growth experienced and supported through testimony within the eastern Pennsylvania coal region. After a period of economic prosperity and community growth from 1900 through 1940 challenges began to erode and occur that created problems for the community and the economy that the coal industry provided. Finally the region’s economy suffered horrendous losses as described by interviews of local residents and families who lived and experienced the rise of the region’s economy. Many of the scars are still evident by the blight and decaying scenes one would experience by traveling through the region’s communities that once fueled the American economy with the energy
