Freedom and Confinement at Play What is theme? “Theme is the subject of a talk, a piece of writing whether literature, stories, etc., a person’s thoughts or feelings and/or a discussion on a certain topic.” (Theme) So what does theme mean to us in regards to Kate Chopin’s stories? By knowing theme and how to analyze it, it can help us decipher Kate Chopin’s writings and obtain a deeper level of thinking on what she was really trying to say in her literature and the feelings she was going through while doing so. As the author of “The Story of an Hour”, “The Storm” and other powerful stories, Kate ties in one main theme in to almost all of her passages. For example, “The Story of an Hour” tells about a woman who is married to a man who is not malicious nor an abusive husband but she simply did not want to be married or “tied down”. Kate is inspired by the idea of giving Mrs. Louise Mallard the opportunity to live her life her own way in this short story. By realizing what the theme is in the short story, the reader will have a better understanding of the whole passage and the issues that tie it all together in to one category. The theme freedom is a principal detail in the story “The Story of an Hour”. This story was written around 1894 when behavior such as staying home and taking care of the house and husband was usual for women.
